Vegetable gardens
The classic use. Slow-release nutrition across a season is what a cropped bed wants, rather than a surge that mostly gives you leaves.
Enriching existing beds
Where the bed is full and the soil is tired. Dug through the surface it lifts both the fertility and the structure.
Seasonal planting
Turning a bed over between crops, or preparing one before planting goes in.
General soil enrichment
Anywhere sandy ground needs organic matter, which in Perth is most places.

Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.
It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

Fully composted
Raw manure burns plants; composted manure feeds them. That is the whole difference, and it is not something you can tell by looking.
50/50, so it is gentle
Sheep is a cooler manure than chicken and cow is milder again. Half and half is a feed you can use on a vegetable bed without worrying about it.
Slow release
Nutrients come out across a season rather than in the first fortnight, which is what a crop actually needs.
It improves structure too
Organic matter is what lets sand hold water and nutrient. Manure adds it while it feeds.

Using Sheep and Cow Manure
How to use Sheep and Cow Manure
Work out the volume
Length by width by depth in metres. Manure goes on thin — a top dressing rather than a layer — so the number is smaller than for a soil.
Spread it evenly or mix it through
Either spread it across the bed and work it in, or mix it directly into the soil as you turn the bed over.
Water it thoroughly
Watering activates the nutrients and settles it against the roots. A dressing that never gets wet sits there doing nothing.
Keep it off the stems
A clear ring at the base of each plant, the same as any organic material you spread.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It is a feed, not a fill. If the bed is empty and needs volume, one of the soil mixes is the right buy — manure is expensive way to fill a hole.
- It is still manure. Keep it away from phosphorus-sensitive natives such as banksias, grevilleas and hakeas, and ask at the counter if you are unsure about a particular plant.
- Composted is not the same as odourless. It is a great deal better than raw, but it is an animal product and it smells like one for a day or two.
- For a fine finish on a lawn, this is not the product. Special Lawn Mix is the top dressing blended for turf.
