What Special Lawn Mix suits

What can you use Special Lawn Mix for?

  • Topdressing a tired or patchy lawn

A thin layer brushed into an established lawn improves the soil the grass is growing in and gets new growth going. It is the standard fix for a lawn that has thinned out rather than died.

  • Levelling uneven ground

It smooths out hollows, dips and the ridges left by trenching, so the lawn mows evenly instead of the mower scalping the high spots. Sandy blends level far better than rich ones because they flow into the low points.

  • Preparing for new rolled turf

Spread at least 50mm before the turf goes down and the new lawn gets a stable, even base to establish into. That depth is the client's own recommendation, and it is the one figure in this range they publish.

  • Feeding the lawn while you level it

The poultry manure means the same pass that fixes the surface also puts organic matter and nutrition into the top layer. Two jobs, one afternoon, one delivery.

How much Special Lawn Mix

How much Special Lawn Mix do you need?

Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.

It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

Whatever you work out here lands in the enquiry form below, already written down.

That is about one trailer load. Order a touch over rather than under — a second trip costs more than the extra scoop.

Special Lawn Mix in Perth

Is Special Lawn Mix suitable for Perth lawns?

The client's own description is that it is formulated for lawns in Perth's challenging climate, and the climate is only half of it. Most of the southern suburbs sit on deep, free-draining sand, so water and nutrients move straight down past a lawn's shallow roots — which is why a lawn can look watered and still be thin.

The Gingin loam is the part of the blend that answers that. It gives the dressing enough body to hold moisture in the top few centimetres where lawn roots actually live, rather than letting it drain through the way plain sand would.

Perth lawns are also watered on a sprinkler roster, so a lawn gets a set number of goes rather than a drink whenever it looks dry. That makes what the soil holds between waterings the thing that matters, and it is the argument for topdressing at all rather than just fertilising.

One local caveat worth raising before you order: if water beads on the surface and runs into the cracks instead of soaking in, the sand has gone water-repellent. Topdressing over that will not fix it. Mention it when you call and we will point you at the product that will.

Why Special Lawn Mix

Why choose Special Lawn Mix?

  • Sandy enough to actually brush in

Top dressing sand is the base for a reason. It works down between the grass blades and settles into the hollows rather than sitting on top as a mat, which is what a garden bed mix would do to a lawn.

  • Gingin loam keeps it from drying out

Pure sand levels beautifully and holds nothing. The loam in the blend is what gives it moisture retention while still draining, so the lawn is not waterlogged after rain and not parched three days later.

  • The poultry manure does the feeding

Manure through the mix enriches the soil with organic matter as the dressing settles in, which is what brings the colour and density back rather than just flattening the surface.

  • A stable base under new turf

Rolled turf establishes as well as the layer under it lets it. A consistent 50mm bed gives the roots something even to knit into, instead of half the lawn striking well and half sulking.

Using Special Lawn Mix

How to use Special Lawn Mix

  1. Work out how much you need

For new turf, length by width by 0.05 gives you the cubic metres for a 50mm bed. For topdressing there is no published depth, so bring the lawn's area to the counter and we will talk through what a thin pass takes.

  2. Topdressing: spread a thin, even layer

Tip it in barrow loads and spread it thinly across the lawn. Thin is the whole discipline here — a heavy layer smothers the grass you are trying to rescue.

  3. Rake or brush it into the grass

Work it down between the blades with a levelling rake or a stiff broom until the grass is standing back up through it. What ends up in the hollows is what does the levelling.

  4. New turf: lay at least 50mm first

Spread the mix across the prepared ground to a minimum of 50mm and level it off before any turf goes down. Get this layer even and the lawn on top of it establishes evenly.

  5. Water it thoroughly

Water well once it is in place. That activates the nutrients, settles the dressing into the surface and, on new turf, closes the gap between the roll and the soil under it.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • It is not a garden bed soil. It is built sandy on purpose, so a bed filled with it will drain faster and hold less than anything you actually want planted in it — Landscape Mix or Veggie Mix are the bed soils.
  • Topdressing improves the soil the grass grows in. It will not rescue a lawn that is failing for another reason, and spreading it over water-repellent sand mostly buries the problem.
  • If water beads on the lawn instead of soaking in, that is repellence, and it needs fixing before you level anything. Ask about Soil Conditioner, a wetting agent or a clay-based product first.
  • If the lawn is already flat and you only want to feed it, a lawn fertiliser is a cheaper and lighter way to do that than a cubic metre of soil and an afternoon with a rake.
  • We do not publish a topdressing depth or a coverage rate for it. Bring the area of the lawn and we will work through the quantity at the counter rather than guessing at it here.

Special Lawn Mix questions

Special Lawn Mix FAQs

  • What is Special Lawn Mix made from?

Top dressing sand, Gingin loam and poultry manure. The sand is what lets it level and brush in, the loam holds the moisture, and the manure is the feed.

  • How thick should I spread Special Lawn Mix under new turf?

At least 50mm. That is the client's own recommendation and the one depth figure published for this range. Length by width by 0.05, in metres, gives you the cubic metres you need for a 50mm bed.

  • How much should I use for topdressing?

A thin, even layer, worked into the grass with a rake or a stiff broom. We do not publish a depth for topdressing, so bring the area of the lawn to the counter and we will work out the quantity with you rather than have you guess.

  • Will Special Lawn Mix level out a bumpy lawn?

Yes, that is one of the jobs it is blended for. Because it is sandy it flows into hollows and settles rather than sitting proud, so repeated thin passes bring a lumpy lawn back to something you can mow evenly. Deep hollows usually need more than one pass.

  • Can I use Special Lawn Mix in garden beds?

We would talk you out of it. It is built sandy for turf, so a bed filled with it drains fast and holds very little. Landscape Mix is the general bed soil, Veggie Mix for edibles, Native Soil Mix for natives.

  • My lawn is patchy and the water runs off it. Will topdressing fix that?

Probably not on its own. Water beading on the surface is water repellence in the sand underneath, and a dressing spread over the top mostly covers it up. Mention it when you order and we will point you at a conditioner or a wetting agent to go in first.

  • Can I collect Special Lawn Mix myself?

Yes. The yard is open seven days and the loader puts it straight into your trailer or ute. If you do not have a trailer you can borrow one of ours free for two hours — yard to your home, no tip trips, and first in best dressed, as we do not take bookings.

  • Can Special Lawn Mix be delivered?

Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs, seven days. The quote comes down to the address, the quantity and whether the truck can get in, so mention tight driveways, low branches or side access. Confirm the current delivery cost when you order.

  • Does Special Lawn Mix meet an Australian Standard?

Yes. Special Lawn Mix is produced to Australian Standard AS 4419, the standard for soils used in landscaping and gardens. It is why one load levels the same as the last one.

Keep it fed after the dressing

The manure in the mix gets it started. These carry it through the rest of the season.

If the job is a garden bed, not a lawn
