• What is the difference between general purpose and rapid set concrete?+

  Strength and speed, and they pull in opposite directions. General Purpose Concrete Mix is rated for load-bearing work, with its strength figures printed on the bag. Rapid Set reaches initial set within 15 minutes and is non-structural.

• Can I use rapid set concrete for a slab or a footing?+

  No. Rapid Set is non-structural and is made for setting posts — clotheslines, letterboxes, sign posts, fence and pergola posts. Anything carrying load wants the General Purpose Concrete Mix instead, and that includes footings, slabs, driveways, beams and lintels — it is the most common mistake made on this page and an expensive one to undo.

• How long do I have with rapid set concrete?+

  It sets within 15 minutes, so mix only what you can place and place it without delay. If it starts to stiffen, do not try to bring it back with extra water — the maximum is printed on the bag and going past it costs you strength.

• How many bags will I need?+

  Work out the volume first: length by width by depth in metres gives you cubic metres, and the calculator on this page does it. Then divide by the yield printed on the bag. Bring the volume to the counter either way and we will work the bag count through with you, and tell you when the job has outgrown bags.

• Do I need to add sand or cement to these bags?+

  No. Both bags already contain GP cement, concreting sand and 10–12mm stone in the right proportions, so water is the only thing you add. If you would rather buy the binder and batch it yourself, the cement page has grey, creme and white general purpose cement.

• How much water do I add?+

  The quantity is printed on the bag and it is worth respecting, because extra water costs you strength in the finished pour. Measure it rather than eyeballing it from a hose.

• Is bagged concrete dangerous to handle?+

  Yes, and the burns are delayed, which is why people get caught. Wet concrete is caustic and the damage often shows up hours later — kneeling in a fresh pour in wet trousers is the classic way to do real harm without feeling a thing. Waterproof gloves, eye protection and waterproof knee pads, and a P2 mask while you tip the dry bag, because the dust contains crystalline silica.

• Can I collect it, or do you deliver?+

  Both. The yard is open seven days and every customer gets two hours of our trailers free. For pallet quantities tell us the address and where the pallet can be set down, and confirm the current delivery cost when you order.
