Mushroom compost, bagged in 30 litres or loose by the cubic metre from our own yard. Compost is the fastest way to put organic matter back into tired soil — it feeds the biology, holds moisture and improves structure as it breaks down.
One thing worth knowing before you buy: mushroom compost is not recommended for acid-loving plants such as azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons, or for some natives. If that is what you are feeding, ask at the counter and we will point you somewhere better.

How much compost do you need?
Work it out before you drive down
Length by width by depth gives you cubic metres. Work it out before you come down and you will not be back tomorrow for a second load.
It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly it settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down.
That is about one trailer load. Order a touch over rather than under — a second trip costs more than the extra scoop.
How to choose a compost
Four things that actually decide it
What you are feeding
Mushroom compost suits vegetable gardens, vines, fruit trees and established beds. It does not suit azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons or some natives. That one distinction decides whether this is the right page for you.
On top, or dug through
As a mulch it goes on 50 to 75mm deep and stays clear of the stems. As a conditioner it gets mixed through the soil instead of sitting on the surface. Same bag, different result.
Bag or cubic metre
A 30 litre bag tops up a bed and fits in a boot. Once you are doing a whole garden the bulk compost works out cheaper by volume, and we will load it or deliver it. The changeover point is usually around three or four bags.
What it is not
Compost improves soil that already exists. If the bed is empty you want a soil mix to fill it, then compost to feed it. Buying compost to fill a bed means paying for fertility you cannot use yet.
