Aussie Organic Mushroom Compost

Composted once already. Ready fast.

This is 100% genuine spent mushroom farm compost, bagged in 30 litres by Aussie Organics Garden Supplies at Serpentine, who have been doing it since 1994. It has already been composted once to grow mushrooms in, so it arrives fine textured, well broken down and quick to release its nutrients. Not for azaleas, camellias or rhododendrons.

What Aussie Organic Mushroom Compost suits

What can you use Aussie Organic Mushroom Compost for?

  • Vegetable gardens

Dug through before planting. Fast-breaking compost suits an annual bed, where the crop is only there for a season and needs the feed now.

  • Vineyards and fruit trees

Listed on the client's own use list. Spread out from the trunk and either mulched over or worked lightly into the surface.

  • Established beds needing a lift

Topping up soil that has gone tired before a new planting, rather than replacing it. It restores structure and organic matter together.

  • As a mulch, 50 to 75mm

One of the three uses on the pack. Keep it clear of the stems, the same as any mulch.

How many bags?

Depends whether you are mulching or digging

Mushroom compost has two depths, because the pack has two uses. As a mulch it goes on 50 to 75mm; as a conditioner it is dug through the top of the soil and goes much further.

Thirty litres is 0.03 of a cubic metre, so the arithmetic is simple once you know which of the two you are doing.

UseDepthWhat a 30L bag does
As a mulch50 to 75mmAbout 0.5m² at 60mm. Mulching a bed takes a lot of bags.
As a soil conditionerDug through the top 100mmAbout 1.5m², depending how rich you want the bed.
Potting mix additiveA proportion of the mixA component, not the whole pot. Ask us for a ratio.

Not recommended for azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons or some natives. And garden composts contain micro-organisms — gloves, keep it damp, wash your hands afterwards.

Why Aussie Organic Mushroom Compost

Why choose Aussie Organic Mushroom Compost?

  • 100% genuine, not a blend

Spent mushroom compost, not a general compost with some mushroom compost in it. What the bag says is what is in it.

  • It breaks down quickly

Already composted once, so the nutrients reach the plant sooner than they would from a coarse compost that is still working.

  • It holds water in sand

Up to 65 per cent of its own weight, by the client's figure. On free-draining Perth sand that is worth as much as the feed.

  • Mulch or conditioner, your choice

Spread it on top or dig it through. The pack lists both, plus use as a potting mix additive.

Using Aussie Organic Mushroom Compost

How to use Aussie Organic Mushroom Compost

  1. Decide whether it is a mulch or a conditioner

As a mulch, lay it 50 to 75mm deep and keep it clear of the stems. As a soil conditioner, mix it through the soil rather than leaving it sitting on the surface. The pack supports both.

  2. Check what is planted there

It is not recommended for some native plants or for acid-loving plants such as azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons. If those are what you are planting, ask us for a native mix instead.

  3. Water it in

Compost that dries out on the surface can shed water rather than take it. Wetting it once it is down gets it working and keeps it there.

  4. Use it in potting mix sparingly

The pack lists it as a potting mix additive, which means a component rather than the mix itself. A proportion through a mix, not a pot filled with it.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • Not recommended for some native plants or acid-loving plants such as azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons. Ask us for a native mix if that is the bed you are filling.
  • It is a conditioner and a feed, not a soil. It improves a bed; it does not fill one.
  • The 65 per cent water figure is the client's, not a reading off the bag — the pack's fine print is not legible in the photograph we have, so we have attributed it rather than presented it as printed.
  • Past a few beds it is worth pricing the bulk mushroom compost by the cubic metre. It is a different blend, so ask us which suits the job before you switch.
  • Garden composts contain micro-organisms. Wear gloves, keep the product damp while you handle it, and wash your hands afterwards.

Aussie Organic Mushroom Compost questions

Aussie Organic Mushroom Compost FAQs

  • What is mushroom compost?

The composted substrate mushrooms were grown in, once the crop has finished. It has already been through a full composting process, which is why it is fine textured and quick to release its nutrients.

  • Can I use it on azaleas or camellias?

No. It is not recommended for acid-loving plants such as azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons, or for some natives. Ask us for a native mix instead.

  • Is it a mulch or a soil conditioner?

The pack lists both, plus use as a potting mix additive. As a mulch, lay it 50 to 75mm deep and keep it off the stems. As a conditioner, mix it through the soil.

  • Is this the same as your bulk mushroom compost?

No. This bagged one is 100% genuine spent mushroom compost; the bulk product we sell by the cubic metre is a different blend. Tell us the job and we will say which suits it.

  • How much water does it hold?

Up to 65 per cent of its own weight, which is the figure we have been given rather than one we have measured. On sandy ground that matters as much as the feed does.

  • Will it burn my plants?

It is a compost rather than a raw manure, so it is far gentler than fresh manure. It is still worth working it through rather than banking it against stems.

  • How many bags for a veggie bed?

Dug through the top of the soil, a 30 litre bag does about 1.5 square metres. As a mulch it goes about a third as far. Measure the bed and tell us which you are doing.

  • Can it be delivered?

Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs. Tell us how many bags and the address, and confirm the current delivery cost when you order.
