Triple C is DSATCO's, made at Wongan Hills from corn, chicken manure and canola — the residues left over from Western Australian wheatbelt cropping. The bag calls it a specially prepared compost mulch, and that is the right way to think about it: it covers the bed and feeds it at the same time.

What Triple C suits
What can you use Triple C for?
Beds that want feeding as well as covering
It is a compost mulch, so it brings organic matter into the top of the profile while it shades it. A bark mulch does the shading and nothing else.
Shrub and perennial borders
Established plantings that get mulched once or twice a year and are not going to be dug over. The compost works into the surface without you having to.
Vegetable beds between crops
Covering a bed that is resting, so it is not baking bare through a Perth summer and there is something in the top of it when you come back to plant.
Boot-sized jobs and whole gardens
The eco-bale is compressed so it fits in a boot, and there is a 1000 litre bulk bag when you are covering real ground.
How much Triple C do you need?
Bales in, square metres out
The eco-bale is compressed to about 70 litres of mulch, so it is a good deal more than the pack looks like. Work off the area of the bed.
These are DSATCO's figures at the 40 to 50mm they recommend. A thinner layer does not block the light to germinating weed seed, so buy on the area rather than stretching it.

Why choose Triple C?
It feeds as it breaks down
Reported at 12.5 g/kg of nitrogen, so it releases rather than borrows. That is the opposite of what a raw woody mulch does to a bed in its first month.
Made from what would otherwise be waste
Corn, chicken manure and canola residue from WA wheatbelt cropping, composted rather than burnt. The product exists because that material has to go somewhere.
Drops the soil temperature
DSATCO put it at 5 to 10°C under the mulch layer. In a Perth February that is the difference between roots that keep working and roots that shut down.
Compressed, so you can carry it
A 100 litre eco-bale expands to about 70 litres of mulch. It goes in a boot and comes out covering four to five square metres.

Using Triple C
How to use Triple C
Clear the bed and water it through
Pull what is growing — mulch stops new weeds germinating, it does not kill established ones — and wet the soil properly first. Mulch over dry sand keeps it dry.
Spread a uniform 40 to 50mm layer
Uniform is the operative word: a thin patch is where the weeds come through. That depth is DSATCO's and it is the one the coverage figures assume.
Keep it 100mm clear of every stem
Leave a clear ring around the base of each plant. Mulch held against a stem holds moisture there, and that is how collar rot starts.
Water it in immediately
Water it as soon as it is down, and keep the material damp while you are working with it. Wear gloves and avoid breathing the dust — standard handling for any composted product with live microbes in it.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It contains chicken manure. If you are mulching phosphorus-sensitive natives — banksias, grevilleas, hakeas — ask us at the counter rather than assuming, because a straight bark mulch is usually the pick there.
- The analysis figures are retailer-sourced rather than DSATCO's own. They are the best available, and we would rather label them than present them as verified. If you need them confirmed for a job, ask and we will chase them up.
- It is not a decorative mulch. It is composted plant material and it looks like it. For a front garden where the finish is the point, the coloured mulches are what that job wants.
- It breaks down, which is the point of it. On a verge you would rather not touch for three years, pine bark or wood chips last far longer.
