What can you use Landscape Mix for?
New garden beds
This is the job it is blended for. The loam gives roots something with structure to grow into and the compost supplies the nutrition, so a bed filled with it is ready to plant rather than needing to be fed first.
Topping up existing beds
Beds settle and lose volume over a season or two. Spreading Landscape Mix across the top and mixing it lightly into the existing soil restores the level and adds organic matter at the same time.
Residential and commercial landscaping
It suits general planting across a whole site, which is why it is the mix most landscapers order by the truck rather than specifying something different for every bed.
Flower beds and vegetable gardens
It works for both. If the bed is exclusively for edibles, Veggie Mix is blended specifically for that job and is the better choice — see the comparison below.
How much Landscape Mix
How much Landscape Mix do you need?
Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.
It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

Is Landscape Mix suitable for Perth conditions?
Most of Perth's southern suburbs sit on deep, free-draining sand. Sand holds very little organic matter, so water and nutrients move straight down through it and past the root zone — which is why a bed that looks well watered can still have thirsty plants in it.
Sand that has dried out repeatedly can also turn water-repellent, where water beads on the surface instead of soaking in. Adding organic matter is the standard local answer to both problems, and that is the job this blend does: the compost holds moisture in the root zone, the loam keeps the bed from packing down.
If water is already beading on your existing soil rather than soaking in, mention it when you order. That is a soil that needs conditioning as well as topping up, and the fix is a different product.

Loam holds its shape and resists compaction, which keeps air moving through the bed. Roots need oxygen as well as water, and a bed that packs down tight starves them of it.
The compost carries the nutrition
FOGO compost is organic matter that has already broken down, so the nutrients in it are available to plants rather than being locked up while the material decomposes.
It holds moisture rather than shedding it
Organic matter acts like a sponge in the soil. On the free-draining sand most of Perth's southern suburbs sit on, that is the difference between water reaching the roots and water running straight past them.

That is the Australian Standard for landscaping and garden soils, so what is in the mix is consistent between one load and the next. It is also a WALGA preferred product, which is why councils and landscaping contractors across WA specify it.

Using Landscape Mix
How to use Landscape Mix
Work out how much you need
Length by width by depth, in metres, gives you cubic metres. The calculator further down does it for you. Round up rather than down — a second trip costs more than the extra scoop.
Prepare the bed
Clear weeds and break up the surface of whatever is already there, so the new mix knits into it rather than sitting on top as a separate layer.
Spread it evenly
Spread the mix across the bed, or use it to top up existing soil. Keep the depth consistent so the bed does not settle unevenly later.
Mix and water in
Lightly mix it into the top layer of the existing soil, then water thoroughly. The watering is what activates the nutrients and settles the mix around the roots.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It is a mix, not a conditioner. If your bed is already full and the soil in it is simply tired or water-repellent, you want Soil Conditioner or Mushroom Compost worked in — buying a mix means paying for volume you have no use for.
- It is not blended for WA natives. Natives generally do not want this much richness; Native Soil Mix is the one for that.
- For a bed that is exclusively vegetables, Veggie Mix is the better choice.
- Ask at the counter before ordering for a lawn. Turf wants something sandier that levels out, which is what Special Lawn Mix is for.
