What can you use Mushroom Compost for?
Conditioning tired soil
Dug through the top of a bed that has stopped performing. Organic matter is almost always what Perth sand is short of.
Feeding as a mulch
Spread on top of a planted bed it holds moisture, suppresses weeds and feeds downward at the same time. Not many mulches do all three.
Vegetable gardens
Between crops or before planting. It is rich enough to make a real difference to a bed that is cropped hard.
Boosting soil biology
It is alive. The microbiology is what turns organic matter into something a plant can actually use.
How much Mushroom Compost
How much Mushroom Compost do you need?
Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.
It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

How to use Mushroom Compost
Work out the volume
Length by width by depth in metres gives cubic metres. As a mulch you want 50 to 75mm; dug in, work to how deep you are turning the bed.
Dug in: work it through the topsoil
Mix it into the top of the existing soil rather than leaving it as a layer. A layer of compost on sand is two materials; mixed through, it is soil.
As mulch: spread evenly and keep it off stems
An even layer around plants, with a clear ring at the base of each. Compost held against a stem holds moisture there.
Water it in either way
Watering settles it and gets the biology going. A conditioner that never gets properly wet is doing half its job.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It is a conditioner, not a soil. If the bed is empty and needs filling, you are paying for volume you have nowhere to put — Landscape Mix or Veggie Mix are the ones for that.
- It is not recommended for some natives and acid-loving plants such as azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons. Ask at the counter before you spread it on those beds.
- It is rich. On a native bed or anything that wants lean soil, that richness is a problem rather than a benefit.
- As a mulch it breaks down faster than bark or wood chips, because it is already composted. Expect to top it up rather than lay it once.
