What is the difference between Brickies Grey, Brickies Lite and the Creme Pre-Mix?

Brickies Grey and Brickies Lite are cement pre-blended with Hylime, so the lime dose is right in every batch and you add sand and water. The only difference between those two is colour: grey cement in one, Cockburn Creme in the other. The Creme Mortar Pre-Mix goes a step further and includes the brickies sand, so it needs water only.

Can I use Brickies Grey or Brickies Lite in concrete?

No. Neither is a concrete cement, so neither goes into a slab, a footing or any concrete work. For pouring, use the General Purpose Concrete Mix on the concrete bags page, or buy general purpose cement and batch it with sand and aggregate yourself.

Is M3 mortar suitable for brickwork near the coast?

Not for external brickwork within 1km of the coast. The masonry code calls for M4 in that band, and both Brickies products are classified AS3700 M3. In Perth that rules out a long list of suburbs, so measure the distance before you buy, or tell us where the job is and we will flag it if it looks marginal.

How much sand do I add per bag?

We do not publish a ratio, because how much sand a mortar wants depends on the mortar you are building and on the sand itself. The bag carries the proportions, and that is the authority. Bring the job to the counter and we will talk it through if you would rather check with a person.

Is mortar dangerous to handle?

Yes, and the lime in it makes it worse rather than better. Wet mortar is caustic and burns skin, but the burns are delayed, so a splash you ignored in the morning can be a chemical burn by the evening. Waterproof gloves, sealed eye protection and covered arms, every batch.

Yes. The dry blend contains crystalline silica and hydrated lime goes airborne easily. Wear a P2 mask while you tip and mix, tip the bag low into the mixer, and keep it out of the wind.

Fifty-six. Brickies bags are 17.85kg and one bag is sized for a standard 3.5 cubic foot mixer, which makes the arithmetic easy — your bag count is your mixer loads. The Creme Mortar Pre-Mix is a 20kg bag and is sold for small jobs rather than by the tonne.

Can I collect it, or do you deliver?

Both. The yard is open seven days and every customer gets two hours of our trailers free, which covers most bag orders. For tonne or pallet quantities give us the address and somewhere it can be set down, and confirm the current delivery cost when you order.

How much mortar do you need?

What you add, and what is already in the bag

The difference between these four is how much of the work has been done for you. Two are cement and lime, waiting for your sand. Two are the whole mix, waiting for water.

For anything more than a small job, the bag size is what tells you how many to buy — a Brickies bag is sized to one load of a standard 3.5 cubic foot mixer.

Both Brickies products are AS3700 M3, which the masonry code does not allow for external brickwork within a kilometre of the coast — that wants M4. Neither is a concrete cement. Wet cement and lime burn skin and the dust contains silica: gloves, eye protection and a P2 mask.

How to choose a mortar

Four things that actually decide it

Are you laying or pouring?
Neither Brickies product is a concrete cement, and neither belongs in a slab, a footing or any concrete work. Mortar is for bedding masonry and pointing joints. If you are pouring, the concrete bags are the right page and the General Purpose mix is the right bag.
How close the job is to the coast
Brickies Grey and Brickies Lite are both classified AS3700 M3, and M3 is not suitable for external brickwork within 1km of the coast — the masonry code requires M4 there. A good deal of Perth sits inside that band. Check the distance before you order rather than after the wall is up.
Do you want to buy sand as well?
The Brickies bags have the cement and lime proportioned for you, but the sand is yours to add — cheaper per batch, and the right answer for a real run of brickwork. The Creme Mortar Pre-Mix has the brickies sand in it too, so there is nothing to order, measure, carry or store.
How you are getting it home
