Adbri Grey Mortar is a pre-blended mortar in a 20kg bag — sand, cement and lime, classified AS3700 M3 on the pack. You add water and lay. It is the standard grey joint, for bricklaying, barbecues and letterboxes.

How many bags of grey mortar?
Count the bricks, not the metres
Mortar quantity follows the number of joints, which follows the number of bricks. A square metre of standard brickwork is a much better starting point than a square metre of anything else.
For small jobs it is quicker to bring the brick count to the counter and have somebody who does it daily tell you, than to work it out from a table.

Water quantity is printed on the bag and it is the number that matters. Wet mortar burns skin and the burns are delayed, so people often do not notice at the time. The dry blend contains crystalline silica. Gloves, eye protection and a P2 mask, every time.

How to use Adbri Grey Mortar
Work out how many bags first
Mortar goes further than people expect on a small job and nowhere near as far as they expect on a wall. Bring the brick count to the counter.
Add water to the bag's figure
The quantity is printed on the pack. Measure it rather than eyeball it — extra water buys workability and costs strength.
Mix small batches
Mortar has a working life. Mix what you will lay, not what you will still be looking at in an hour.
Keep it off your skin
Waterproof gloves and eye protection. Lime makes mortar more caustic, not less.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It is an M3 mortar. AS 3700 asks for M4 in severe marine exposure — in practice within about a kilometre of the water, which catches a lot of Perth. For external brickwork near the coast, check the classification before you lay.
- It is a mortar, not a concrete. It bonds masonry together; it does not carry structural load and it is not a substitute for a concrete mix.
- Mortar is caustic wet and the burns it leaves are delayed, so a splash you ignored in the morning can be a chemical burn by evening.
- The dry blend contains crystalline silica. P2 mask while you tip the bag, and mix in the open air.
