What Brickies Grey suits

What can you use Brickies Grey for?

  • Bricklaying mortar

The job it is made for. Grey joints, consistent batch to batch, and one less material to measure at the mixer.

  • Blockwork

Bedding blocks and cores. Same mix, same bag, and the lime keeps it workable long enough to lay a course properly.

  • Pointing and repointing

The lime in it is what lets a pointing mortar be worked into a joint and stay there rather than shrinking out of it.

  • Brickwork more than 1km from the coast

External work inland is what M3 is for. Inside the coastal kilometre the code wants M4 and this is not it — check the distance before you order.

How much mortar?

Count it in mixer loads

Brickies Grey is batched by the bag, not by the cubic metre: one 17.85kg bag suits a standard 3.5 cubic foot mixer, and there are 56 bags to a tonne.

How much sand goes with each bag depends on the mortar class you are building, so it is on the pack rather than here. Tell us what you are laying and we will work the sand out with you.

AS3700 M3. Not permitted for external brickwork within a kilometre of the coast, where the code requires M4. And it is not a concrete cement — it does not go in slabs or footings.

Brickies Grey in Perth

The coastal kilometre, and why it catches people out

The masonry code does not allow M3 mortar for external brickwork within a kilometre of the coast — salt-laden air is hard on a mortar joint and M4 is what the code calls for there. Brickies Grey is M3.

A good deal of Perth sits inside that band, and it is not obvious from the street. The fix is not complicated: grey GP cement, brickies sand and Hylime blends to M4. If you are unsure how far out the job is, ask us before you order — it is a much cheaper conversation than the one that starts after an inspection.

Why Brickies Grey

Why choose Brickies Grey?

  • The lime dose is right every time

Cement and Hylime already proportioned. Hand-dosed lime is the ingredient most likely to drift across a day, and drift shows up as mortar that lays differently at four o'clock than it did at eight.

  • One bag, one mixer load

Sized for a standard 3.5 cubic foot mixer, so the batching is decided before you start rather than argued about at the barrow.

  • 56 bags to a tonne

Which makes ordering arithmetic rather than guesswork when you are pricing a wall.

  • A named classification

AS3700 M3. You know what you have got, which also means you know where you cannot use it.

Using Brickies Grey

How to use Brickies Grey

  1. Check the distance to the coast first

M3 is not permitted for external brickwork within a kilometre of the water; the code calls for M4 there. If the job is anywhere near the coast, ring us before you order rather than after the wall is up.

  2. Batch by the bag

One bag to a standard 3.5 cubic foot mixer. How much sand goes with it is on the pack and depends on the mortar you want — bring the job to the counter if it is specified.

  3. Dry mix, then water

Get the blend through the sand before the water arrives. Water first gives you lumps of binder that never fully wet out and a mortar that lays unevenly.

  4. Keep the batches the same

Mortar colour is set by the ratio and the sand. Change either halfway up a wall and the joints will tell everyone about it for the life of the brickwork.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • It is NOT a concrete cement. It does not go in a slab, a footing or any concrete work — that is the general purpose cement or the concrete bags.
  • M3 is not suitable for external brickwork within a kilometre of the coast, where the masonry code requires M4. Blending cement, sand and Hylime yourself is the route to M4.
  • There is no sand in the bag. If you were expecting to add water only, that is the Creme Mortar Pre-Mix.
  • Wet cement and lime burn skin, and the burns are delayed so people often do not notice at the time. The dry dust contains crystalline silica. Gloves, eye protection and a P2 mask, every time.

Brickies Grey questions

Brickies Grey FAQs

  • What do I add to Brickies Grey?

Sand and water. The cement and the Hylime are already blended in the bag, so the lime dose is done. How much sand depends on the mortar you want and it is printed on the pack.

  • Can I use it near the coast?

Not for external brickwork within a kilometre of the water. It is AS3700 M3 and the masonry code requires M4 there. Grey GP cement, brickies sand and Hylime blends to M4 instead.

  • Can I use it in a footing or a slab?

No. It is not a concrete cement. For concrete work use general purpose cement with sand and aggregate, or the bagged General Purpose Concrete Mix.

  • How many bags to a tonne?

Fifty-six. One bag is also sized for a standard 3.5 cubic foot mixer, which is the easier number when you are actually laying.

  • What is the difference between this and Brickies Lite?

Colour. Brickies Grey uses grey cement and gives a grey joint; Brickies Lite uses Cockburn Creme and gives a cream one. Both are AS3700 M3 and both carry the coastal limit.

  • Why not just buy cement and lime separately?

You can, and it is what you do when you need M4 or a different mix. The pre-blend buys consistency — the lime dose is identical in every bag, which hand-measuring across a day rarely is.

  • Do I need protective gear?

Yes. Wet mortar is caustic and the lime makes it worse, and the burns are delayed so the damage is generally done before anyone feels it. Gloves, eye protection, long sleeves, and a P2 mask while you tip.

  • Can it be delivered?

Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs. Tell us how many bags and the address, and confirm the current delivery cost when you order.
