What can you use Plasterers Sand for?
Internal render
Walls and ceilings where the surface is going to be seen and painted. The fine grain is what lets a flat coat read as flat.
External render
Same job outside, where it also has to survive weather. Reduced cracking as it dries matters more when the wall is exposed.
Detailed and decorative work
Mouldings, edges, anything intricate. A coarse grain fights fine detail; this one does not.
Patching and making good
Small repairs where the patch has to disappear into the surrounding wall rather than announce itself.

How much Plasterers Sand do you need?
Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.
It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

A consistent particle size dries evenly. Uneven drying is what puts a spider of cracks through a fresh render, and it is not something you can fix afterwards.

It mixes into a smooth, pliable paste. That saves effort on a big wall and it saves the finish on a detailed one.

Using Plasterers Sand
How to use Plasterers Sand
Work out the volume
Length by width by depth in metres gives you cubic metres. The calculator further down does it. Render is a thin coat over a big area, so measure the wall rather than guessing.
Mix one lime or cement to three sand
That is the client's own ratio. Add water to the consistency you want — a render that is too wet slumps and one that is too dry will not bond.
Prepare the surface
The substrate has to be clean and keyed enough for the render to grip. Most render failures are bond failures, and they start before any sand is mixed.
Apply in thin layers
Thin coats, built up. One thick coat dries unevenly and that is exactly the cracking the fine grain is there to avoid.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It is not a bricklaying sand. It will lay a brick, but the mortar is less cohesive than one made with brickies sand and a bricklayer will notice within a course.
- It is not a bedding or paving sand. Anything load-bearing wants a coarser material and a compacted base beneath it.
- It is not a play sand. White washed sand is the triple-washed product for sandpits and playgrounds.
- The 1:3 ratio is a starting point. Lime, cement and the substrate all change what the mix should be, so ask if the job matters.
