Hylime Hydrated Lime

What makes a mortar behave on the trowel.

Hylime is Cockburn's hydrated building lime in 20kg bags, made to AS1672 Building Limes with a measured air-entraining agent. Added to mortar and render it improves workability and plasticity, holds water in the mix so it cures rather than dries, and lets fine cracks heal themselves through carbonation. It is the lime already inside Brickies Grey and Brickies Lite.

What Hylime Hydrated Lime suits

What can you use Hylime Hydrated Lime for?

  • Brick and block mortar

The main job. Cement, brickies sand and Hylime is the mortar a bricklayer actually wants under a trowel.

  • Render and floor screeds

Lime holds water in a render, so it stays workable up the wall and is far less prone to crazing as it cures.

  • Site-blended M4, M3 and M2

The reason to buy lime rather than a pre-blended bag. You choose the class, which the pre-blended bags decide for you.

  • Pointing and repair mixes

Repointing wants a mortar that can be worked into a joint and will not shrink out of it. Lime is what buys that.

Which bag, and how it is sold

Sold by the bag, dosed by ratio

Lime is bought by the 20kg bag and used as a proportion of the mortar, so how many bags you need follows the mix and the wall rather than a coverage rate.

The proportions are on the pack, and they change with the class of mortar you are building. We would rather send you there than print one number that is right for M4 and wrong for M2.

Hylime Hydrated Lime in Perth

Why Perth bricklayers still buy lime by the bag

The masonry code does not allow M3 mortar for external brickwork within a kilometre of the coast — it calls for M4 there. The pre-blended brickies bags are M3, so on a coastal job the only route to a compliant mortar is cement, sand and lime blended on site.

A good deal of Perth sits inside that band and it is not always obvious which side of it a job is on. If you are not sure, ask us before you order. It is a far cheaper conversation than the one that starts after the wall is up.

Why Hylime Hydrated Lime

Why choose Hylime Hydrated Lime?

  • It sets the dose, so you set the class

Buying the lime separately is the only way to blend M4, which the masonry code requires for external brickwork within a kilometre of Perth's coast.

  • Workability, measurably

Plasticity and water retention are what a bricklayer means by a mortar that works. A lean cement-and-sand mix has neither and fights you all day.

  • It heals its own hairlines

Carbonation closes fine cracks over time. That is a property of the lime, not a claim about the brand.

  • AS1672, with the air-entrainer measured

A specified building lime rather than agricultural or garden lime, which are different products and do not belong in a wall.

Using Hylime Hydrated Lime

How to use Hylime Hydrated Lime

  1. Settle the mortar class first

M4, M3 or M2 is a decision about the job, not a preference. The proportions are on the bag and the counter will talk them through — how much lime a mortar wants depends on the mix you are building.

  2. Measure it, do not eyeball it

Lime by the bucket, the same as the cement and the sand. Too little and the mortar is harsh; too much and it loses strength.

  3. Blend the powders before the water

Cement and lime through the sand first, dry. Lime added to a wet mix goes to lumps and stays that way.

  4. Take more care with it than with cement

Hydrated lime is more caustic than cement powder, and finer, so it goes airborne easily. Waterproof gloves, sealed eye protection, long sleeves and a P2 mask, and tip it low and out of the wind.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • It is not a binder on its own. Lime goes into a cement mortar; it does not replace the cement in one.
  • It is not garden lime and it is not agricultural lime. Those are different products for different jobs and they do not belong in a wall — if you are after lime for soil, ask us for the right one.
  • No dose is published here, because it depends on the mortar you are building. The bag carries the proportions and the counter will go through them.
  • Wet cement and lime burn skin, and the burns are delayed so people often do not notice at the time. Hydrated lime is more caustic than cement, and the dry dust contains crystalline silica. Gloves, eye protection and a P2 mask, every time.

Hylime Hydrated Lime questions

Hylime Hydrated Lime FAQs

  • What does lime actually do in a mortar?

It makes it workable. Lime adds plasticity so the mortar behaves on the trowel, and it holds water in the mix so the mortar cures instead of drying out. It also lets fine cracks heal themselves through carbonation.

  • Can I leave the lime out?

You can, and a cement-and-sand mortar will still hold bricks together. It will also be harsh to lay, prone to shrinkage cracking, and it gives up its water to the brick before it has cured.

  • How much lime do I add?

It depends on the mortar class you are building, so the proportions are on the bag rather than here. Bring the job to the counter if it is specified and we will go through it.

  • Is this the same as garden lime?

No. Hylime is a building lime made to AS1672, for mortar and render. Garden and agricultural limes are different products for soil, and neither belongs in a wall.

  • Why buy lime instead of a pre-blended brickies bag?

Because the pre-blended bags are M3 and the dose is fixed. Buying lime separately lets you blend M4, which the code requires for external brickwork within a kilometre of the coast.

  • Is it the same lime that is in Brickies Grey?

Yes. Cockburn blend Hylime into both Brickies Grey and Brickies Lite. Buying it on its own simply moves the dosing decision to you.

  • Do I need protective gear?

More than for cement, not less. Hydrated lime is more caustic, it burns skin and eyes, and the burns are delayed so most people see the damage hours later. Waterproof gloves, sealed eye protection, long sleeves and a P2 mask.

  • Can it be delivered?

Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs. Tell us how many bags and the address, and confirm the current delivery cost when you order.
