Hylime Hydrated Lime
What makes a mortar behave on the trowel.
Hylime is Cockburn's hydrated building lime in 20kg bags, made to AS1672 Building Limes with a measured air-entraining agent. Added to mortar and render it improves workability and plasticity, holds water in the mix so it cures rather than dries, and lets fine cracks heal themselves through carbonation. It is the lime already inside Brickies Grey and Brickies Lite.

Real stock, not a swatch. Blended products vary a little batch to batch, so treat these as a guide rather than an exact colour match.

What Hylime Hydrated Lime suits
What can you use Hylime Hydrated Lime for?
Brick and block mortar
The main job. Cement, brickies sand and Hylime is the mortar a bricklayer actually wants under a trowel.
Render and floor screeds
Lime holds water in a render, so it stays workable up the wall and is far less prone to crazing as it cures.
Site-blended M4, M3 and M2
The reason to buy lime rather than a pre-blended bag. You choose the class, which the pre-blended bags decide for you.
Pointing and repair mixes
Repointing wants a mortar that can be worked into a joint and will not shrink out of it. Lime is what buys that.
Which bag, and how it is sold
Sold by the bag, dosed by ratio
Lime is bought by the 20kg bag and used as a proportion of the mortar, so how many bags you need follows the mix and the wall rather than a coverage rate.
The proportions are on the pack, and they change with the class of mortar you are building. We would rather send you there than print one number that is right for M4 and wrong for M2.
| Pack | Weight | What it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Hylime hydrated lime | 20kg bag | The only size. Mortar, render, screeds and pointing. |
| Dose | Printed on the bag | Depends on the mortar class. Ask at the counter if the job is specified. |
| Already blended | 17.85kg brickies bags | Cement and lime done for you, M3 only. Not for coastal external brickwork. |
Hydrated lime is more caustic than cement powder and the burns it causes are delayed. Waterproof gloves, sealed eye protection, long sleeves and a P2 mask, every time.
Hylime Hydrated Lime in Perth
Why Perth bricklayers still buy lime by the bag
The masonry code does not allow M3 mortar for external brickwork within a kilometre of the coast — it calls for M4 there. The pre-blended brickies bags are M3, so on a coastal job the only route to a compliant mortar is cement, sand and lime blended on site.
A good deal of Perth sits inside that band and it is not always obvious which side of it a job is on. If you are not sure, ask us before you order. It is a far cheaper conversation than the one that starts after the wall is up.
Why Hylime Hydrated Lime
Why choose Hylime Hydrated Lime?
It sets the dose, so you set the class
Buying the lime separately is the only way to blend M4, which the masonry code requires for external brickwork within a kilometre of Perth's coast.
Workability, measurably
Plasticity and water retention are what a bricklayer means by a mortar that works. A lean cement-and-sand mix has neither and fights you all day.
It heals its own hairlines
Carbonation closes fine cracks over time. That is a property of the lime, not a claim about the brand.
AS1672, with the air-entrainer measured
A specified building lime rather than agricultural or garden lime, which are different products and do not belong in a wall.

Using Hylime Hydrated Lime
How to use Hylime Hydrated Lime
Settle the mortar class first
M4, M3 or M2 is a decision about the job, not a preference. The proportions are on the bag and the counter will talk them through — how much lime a mortar wants depends on the mix you are building.
Measure it, do not eyeball it
Lime by the bucket, the same as the cement and the sand. Too little and the mortar is harsh; too much and it loses strength.
Blend the powders before the water
Cement and lime through the sand first, dry. Lime added to a wet mix goes to lumps and stays that way.
Take more care with it than with cement
Hydrated lime is more caustic than cement powder, and finer, so it goes airborne easily. Waterproof gloves, sealed eye protection, long sleeves and a P2 mask, and tip it low and out of the wind.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It is not a binder on its own. Lime goes into a cement mortar; it does not replace the cement in one.
- It is not garden lime and it is not agricultural lime. Those are different products for different jobs and they do not belong in a wall — if you are after lime for soil, ask us for the right one.
- No dose is published here, because it depends on the mortar you are building. The bag carries the proportions and the counter will go through them.
- Wet cement and lime burn skin, and the burns are delayed so people often do not notice at the time. Hydrated lime is more caustic than cement, and the dry dust contains crystalline silica. Gloves, eye protection and a P2 mask, every time.
