White Washed Sand

Triple-washed, and clean enough for a sandpit.

White Washed Sand is triple-washed to remove impurities, which is what makes it suitable for children's sandpits and school playgrounds. The same cleanliness and fine uniform grain make it the sand to sweep between pavers, and it is non-staining because of the washing.

What White Washed Sand suits

What can you use White Washed Sand for?

  • Children's sandpits

The job the washing is for. Fine, clean and soft, with the impurities taken out of it — which is the whole difference between play sand and any other sand.

  • School and public playgrounds

Same requirement at a larger scale, and the reason it is bought by the truckload rather than the bag.

  • Sweeping between pavers

Fine uniform particles fill the joints and lock the pavers in place. Non-staining matters here too — a dirty sand marks the paving it is meant to finish.

  • A clean, coastal look

Bright white against paving and planting. It reads fresh in a way a yellow builders sand does not.

How much White Washed Sand

How much White Washed Sand do you need?

Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.

It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

Whatever you work out here lands in the enquiry form below, already written down.

That is about one trailer load. Order a touch over rather than under — a second trip costs more than the extra scoop.

Why White Washed Sand

Why choose White Washed Sand?

  • Triple-washed

Three passes to take out the impurities. That is a process the client states, and it is the reason this sand can go where others cannot.

  • Non-staining

The washing takes out the clay and fines that mark paving, hands and clothes. On a paved area that is the difference between finishing the job and starting a cleaning one.

  • Safe and soft underfoot

Fine grain and clean finish, which is what makes it comfortable for a sandpit as well as suitable for one.

  • It drains well

Good drainage, so a sandpit does not stay a puddle after rain and a paved joint does not hold water.

Using White Washed Sand

How to use White Washed Sand

  1. Work out the volume

Length by width by depth, in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a sandpit that is the internal dimensions and how deep you want it filled.

  2. For a sandpit, go generous on depth

Spread a generous layer for a soft, safe base. Shallow sand over a hard base defeats the point of it.

  3. For paving, sweep and compact

Sweep it into the joints and compact it to lock the pavers in place. Repeat after the first rain — the joints settle and want topping up.

  4. Keep a sandpit covered

A cover keeps leaves, cats and rain out of it. That is what keeps clean sand clean, rather than anything about the sand itself.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • It is not a construction sand. It is too clean and too fine to make a good mortar — the fines a brickies sand carries are exactly what the washing removes, and they are what a mortar needs to bond.
  • It is not a bedding sand for a driveway. A load-bearing bed wants a compacted base of roadbase or crushed limestone from the aggregates page.
  • Bright white shows dirt. It is beautiful when it goes down and it will need topping up or turning over in a sandpit that gets real use.
  • It moves in wind more than a coarser sand does, which is worth knowing for an exposed paved area.

White Washed Sand questions

White Washed Sand FAQs

  • Is white washed sand safe for a children's sandpit?

That is what the triple-washing is for. Three passes take out the impurities, leaving a fine, clean, soft sand — which is the whole difference between a play sand and a builders sand.

  • Can I use it between pavers?

Yes, and it is one of its main uses. Sweep it into the joints and compact it to lock the pavers in place. Because it is washed it will not stain the paving the way a dirtier sand can.

  • Can I use white washed sand for mortar?

No. It is too clean and too fine to bond well — the fines a brickies sand carries are exactly what the washing removes, and a mortar needs them. Use brickies sand for laying and this for finishing.

  • How much sand does a sandpit take?

Measure the internal length and width and decide how deep you want it filled, all in metres, and multiply. The calculator on this page does it. Go generous on the depth — shallow sand over a hard base is not soft.

  • Will it stain my paving or my kids' clothes?

It is non-staining, which is a direct result of the triple-wash process. That is one of the reasons it costs more than an unwashed sand.

  • How often should sandpit sand be replaced?

Keeping it covered does more than replacing it does — a cover keeps out leaves, rain and animals. Top it up as it gets carried out of the pit, and turn it over now and then.

  • Can I collect it myself?

Yes, seven days. Sand is heavy: a cubic metre is around a tonne and a half, so check what your trailer is rated to carry. Borrow one of ours free for two hours.

  • Can white washed sand be delivered?

Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs, seven days. Tell us the address, how much you need and where it can be tipped. Confirm the current delivery cost when you order.
