Lawn Sand
For levelling, top-dressing and reviving a tired lawn.
Lawn Sand is a fine sand for top-dressing lawns. Spread thinly it levels the surface, improves drainage and aeration, and gives the grass a competitive edge over moss and weeds — which is most of what a tired lawn actually needs.

Real stock, not a swatch. Blended products vary a little batch to batch, so treat these as a guide rather than an exact colour match.

What Lawn Sand suits
What can you use Lawn Sand for?
Levelling a bumpy lawn
Thin repeated top dressings fill the hollows without smothering the grass. It is the only way to level a lawn you are not prepared to lift and start again.
Reviving a tired lawn
A lawn that has gone thin and patchy is usually a soil problem rather than a grass problem. Top dressing works on the soil.
Improving surface drainage
Where water sits on the lawn after rain or a watering, sand through the surface gives it somewhere to go.
Discouraging moss
Moss takes hold where the surface stays wet and the grass is weak. Improving drainage and thickening the grass removes the conditions moss needs.
How much Lawn Sand
How much Lawn Sand do you need?
Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.
It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.
Whatever you work out here lands in the enquiry form below, already written down.
That is about one trailer load. Order a touch over rather than under — a second trip costs more than the extra scoop.
Lawn Sand in Perth
Top-dressing a lawn that is already growing in sand
Most of Perth is sand to begin with, which makes lawn sand a more nuanced choice here than it is in a city built on clay. If your lawn is struggling because the ground drains too fast and holds nothing, more sand is not the fix.
Where it still earns its place is levelling and surface drainage — a bumpy lawn, or one where water sits in the low corner after every watering. That is a shape problem, and top dressing is how you solve a shape problem without lifting the lawn.
If the lawn is thin because the soil is hydrophobic or holds no nutrient, that is a different job. A wetting agent, a soil improver or a top dressing blended with loam and manure will do more than sand alone. Tell us what the lawn is actually doing and we will point you at the right one.
Why Lawn Sand
Why choose Lawn Sand?
It fixes the ground, not the symptom
Feeding a lawn that is struggling because of its soil buys you a few weeks. Top dressing changes the thing that was actually wrong.
It levels without lifting
Repeated thin dressings bring a bumpy lawn flat over a season or two, at a fraction of the cost and disruption of relaying turf.
Better water and nutrient penetration
Opening up the top of the soil is what lets water and feed reach the roots rather than running off the surface to the low corner.
It thickens the grass over time
A thicker sward is the real weed control. Weeds get in where the grass is thin, and every dressing makes it a little less thin.
Getting Lawn Sand home
How to get Lawn Sand
Collect from the yard
Open seven days at 222 Barrington St, Bibra Lake. The loader puts it straight into your trailer or ute, and someone will tell you whether what you have brought will carry the load.
Borrow one of our trailers free for two hours to get your load home. No charge, no bond.
Have it delivered
Across Perth's southern suburbs, seven days. For a quote we need the address, how much you need, and anything awkward about access — tight driveways, low branches and side access all change which truck we send. Confirm the current cost when you order.
Formats
- Loose, by the cubic metre
- Bulka bag, roughly a cubic metre each
- Trailer load, including our free two hour trailer
Using Lawn Sand
How to use Lawn Sand
Do it during the growing season
Top dress when the grass is actively growing, so it can grow up through the dressing. Doing it in the middle of winter leaves sand sitting on a lawn that cannot respond.
Mow first, and mow short
A short lawn takes a dressing far better than a long one. There is less blade for the sand to sit on and more chance of it reaching the soil.
Spread thin and even
A thin layer, spread evenly with a lawn spreader. Thin is not a suggestion — a thick layer smothers the grass and you go backwards.
Work it in and water well
Drag or broom it so it works down between the blades rather than sitting on top, then water it in thoroughly.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It is not a fertiliser. It improves the soil the lawn grows in, and a hungry lawn still wants feeding — the lawn foods on the garden fertilisers page are what that job needs.
- It will not fix a lawn in one go. Levelling is a job you do thinly, repeatedly, across a season or two. A single thick dressing does harm rather than good.
- It is not the product for preparing ground for new turf. That is Special Lawn Mix, which the client publishes at a minimum of 50mm under rolled turf.
- On a lawn already growing in pure sand, adding more sand is not always the answer. If the problem is that nothing holds water or nutrient, say so at the counter — a soil improver may be the better spend.
