Coarse grain, compacted, gives a stable foundation that does not move under the work sitting on it.
Stables and animal enclosures
It drains, so the surface does not stay wet, and it makes very little dust — both of which matter in a space an animal lives in.
Bird cages and aviaries
A thin layer over the surface gives comfort and drainage. Low dust is the reason it is chosen over a fine sand here.
Landscaping and drainage
Its earthy tone suits outdoor work, and anywhere you need water to move through rather than sit, a coarse sand does the job a fine one will not.

Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.
It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

Where Gingin Quartz comes from
Gingin is the region about an hour and a half north of Perth, and the sand is named for it. That is not branding — the character of a river sand comes from the river it was deposited by, which is why one coarse sand is not the same as another.
It is also why the spelling matters. Gingin is one word, as the town and the shire are, and the same region gives its name to the Gingin loam that goes into our Special Lawn Mix.
Locally sourced also means locally consistent. You are not getting a different grade each time depending on which interstate quarry had stock.

Work out the volume
Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. The calculator further down does it, and rounding up beats a second trip.
For kerbing and paving, layer and compact
Lay it as an even base and compact it as you go. Even coverage matters as much as depth — a soft patch under paving finds you out later.
For stables and cages, a thin layer
Spread a thin layer over the surface. The job there is comfort and drainage rather than structure, so depth is not the point.
Check what is under it
A sand base is only as good as what it sits on. For anything carrying vehicles, that means a compacted roadbase or crushed limestone underneath — ask and describe the load.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It is not a mortar or a render sand. Too coarse for either — brickies sand lays, plasterers sand finishes, and this does neither.
- It is not a play sand. White washed sand is the triple-washed one for sandpits and playgrounds.
- It is a base rather than a structural layer. Anything carrying a vehicle wants compacted roadbase or crushed limestone under the sand, not sand alone.
- Coarse means coarse. Underfoot in bare feet, or as a top finish where a fine sand is expected, it will feel wrong.
