The client puts this one squarely at WA native gardens and a dry climate, and they are right to. The red is close to the colour a great deal of this state already is, so a bed of it looks like ground rather than like a landscaping product.
It also suits how a native garden is watered, which is to say barely. Stone needs nothing, and a gravel bed around drought-tolerant planting is one of the few ground covers that genuinely copes with a Perth summer unattended.
The one caution is heat. Stone stores it, so keep a gravel bed off the base of anything shallow-rooted and give plants a mulched pocket rather than gravel right up to the stem.

How to use 12mm Crushed Pea Gravel
Work out the volume
Length by width by depth in metres gives cubic metres. A path or bed wants 50 to 75mm; a driveway wants more and a proper compacted base under it.
Put a base under a driveway
Gravel on bare sand will not hold up to a vehicle. A compacted road base or crushed limestone layer underneath is what makes the difference.
Edge it
Loose gravel migrates. Garden edging or a mowing strip around the area keeps it where you put it and saves topping it up every year.
Rake and top up occasionally
Traffic thins it in the wheel tracks. A rake and an occasional top-up is the whole maintenance schedule.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- On a driveway it needs a compacted base under it. Laid straight onto sand it will sink and rut, and no amount of extra gravel fixes that.
- It migrates without edging. Loose gravel travels, particularly on a slope or where cars turn.
- Red is a commitment. It looks superb in a native or warm-toned garden and awkward against cool greys and blues, so it is worth holding a handful against the house first.
- It is not a mulch. Stone does not feed the soil, and it holds heat against anything planted close to it.
