How to use Tammin Stone
Work out the volume
Length by width by depth in metres gives cubic metres. Fifty to seventy-five millimetres is the usual depth for a decorative bed. The calculator below does it.
Clear the weeds first
Stone stops seed germinating by blocking light; it does not kill what is already there. A weed mat underneath is worth the trouble.
Spread and rake level
It levels easily at this grade. Even coverage matters more than depth once the ground is hidden.
Blow the leaf litter off occasionally
Weed seed germinates in the litter that collects between stones rather than in the stone itself. Keeping it clear is most of the maintenance.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It is not a mulch. It does not feed the soil and it does not break down into it — anything planted among it wants feeding directly.
- It holds heat, like any stone. Keep it off the base of shallow-rooted plants, particularly against a sunny wall.
- It is permanent in a way mulch is not. Changing your mind means moving stone, which is heavy and slow.
- For a driveway it wants a compacted base under it. Decorative stone straight onto sand will not take a vehicle.
