When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- They are still rounded, so on a busy path they move more than a crushed stone would. For a path that gets real traffic, the 12mm crushed pea gravel is steadier.
- Stone is not a mulch. It does not feed the soil, and anything planted in it wants feeding directly.
- It holds heat. Against a north or west-facing wall a stone bed radiates warmth into the evening, which is hard on shallow-rooted plants.
- Changing your mind means moving stone. It is a permanent ground cover in a way an organic mulch is not.
