Paths and walkways
Crushed rather than rounded, so it takes being walked on. Rounded pebbles roll underfoot; this does not.

Low maintenance is the specification on a verge. Stone does not need watering, mowing or replacing.

Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.
It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

How to use Rainbow Quartz
Work out the volume
Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. A decorative bed is usually 50 to 75mm deep, which is thinner than people guess, so measure rather than estimating.
Deal with the weeds first
Stone suppresses weeds by blocking light, and it does not kill what is already growing. Clear the bed and consider a weed mat underneath, because pulling weeds through stone is miserable work.
Lay it 50 to 75mm deep
Deep enough that the ground does not show through, and no deeper. Extra depth costs money and does nothing.
Rake it level and leave it
It settles into place. Beyond an occasional rake and blowing the leaves off, a stone bed is finished when you finish it.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It does not feed the soil. Stone is a permanent ground cover rather than a mulch — anything planted in it wants feeding directly, and a bed you intend to keep improving wants an organic mulch instead.
- It is permanent in a way mulch is not. Changing your mind means moving stone, which is heavy and slow. Worth being sure before a whole front garden goes down.
- Stone holds heat. Against a north or west-facing wall a stone bed radiates warmth into the evening, which is hard on shallow-rooted plants nearby.
- Weed seed still blows in on top and germinates in the leaf litter that collects between stones. A weed mat underneath helps; nothing makes a stone bed maintenance-free forever.
