Work out the volume

Clear the bed and consider a mat
Stone blocks light to weed seed but will not kill established weeds, and pulling weeds out from between 90mm pebbles is a bad afternoon. Deal with it first.
Place rather than tip, at the edges
In the middle of a bed you can rake them out. Around the edges and against features it is worth placing them, because at this size every one is visible.
Hose them down when they get dusty
Dust settles on any stone. A hose brings the colour back, which is the whole of the maintenance.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- They roll. At 40 to 90mm and rounded, this is not a path surface and not somewhere anyone should be walking. A crushed stone is the one that stays underfoot.
- They are heavy for the coverage. A large pebble needs a deeper layer to cover ground, so a bed takes more material than the same area of a fine stone.
- They are not a mulch. Stone does not feed the soil, and anything planted among it wants feeding directly.
- Leaf litter is more visible between large pebbles than between small ones, and harder to blow out. Under a messy tree, a finer stone is less work.
