How to use Black Basalt
Work out the volume
Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives cubic metres. Fifty to seventy-five millimetres covers ground properly. The calculator below does the sum.
Clear the weeds and consider a mat
Stone blocks the light to seed in the soil but will not kill established weeds. Deal with them first — and weeds show up more against a dark ground.
Use it as a line, not a field
It is at its best defining an edge or a band. A whole garden of charcoal reads heavy, and it is a lot of stored heat.
Hose it when it dulls
Dust shows more on a dark stone than on a pale one. Water brings the depth of the colour straight back.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It absorbs heat. A dark stone bed against a north or west-facing wall gets genuinely hot and radiates into the evening, which is hard on shallow-rooted planting nearby.
- Dust shows. A charcoal stone looks its best clean, and in a dry Perth summer that means hosing it more often than you would a pale one.
- It is a strong commitment. Charcoal ground decides the character of an area, and it does not sit comfortably with every house.
- It is not a mulch. Stone does not feed the soil, and anything planted in it wants feeding directly.
