Weed Mat Garden Rolls

Blocks the light. Lets the water through.

Breathable weed matting in four roll sizes — 910mm x 10m (9m²), 1.8m x 10m (18m²), 910mm x 50m (45m²) and 1.8m x 50m (90m²). It suppresses weeds by blocking light while still letting water and air reach the soil, which is the whole difference between weed mat and a sheet of plastic.

What Weed Mat Garden Rolls suits

What can you use Weed Mat Garden Rolls for?

  • Under mulch in garden beds

The main use. Mat under mulch means the mulch is doing its own job rather than being the only thing between weeds and daylight.

  • Beneath gravel paths and driveways

It also stops the gravel disappearing into the ground over a few years, which on Perth sand it otherwise will.

  • Around trees, shrubs and vegetables

Cut a cross where each plant goes. Because it breathes, the plants inside the cuts keep getting water and air.

  • Borders and retaining wall lines

Lining a border keeps the boundary clean and stops weeds coming through the join between two materials.

Which roll?

Four sizes, two widths

Measure the bed and add a little for overlaps at the joins, then pick the roll that covers it. The two widths matter as much as the areas — a 1.8 metre width crosses most beds in a single run, with no join to overlap at all.

These are the four rolls we carry. Ring or ask at the counter for current pricing and what is on the shelf today.

RollSizeCovers
Small910mm x 10m9m² — a single garden bed or a short path.
Wide, short1.8m x 10m18m² — crosses most beds in one run, no join.
Narrow, long910mm x 50m45m² — long borders and path runs.
Wide, long1.8m x 50m90m² — a whole yard.

Weed the bed before you lay it, overlap the joins, and cover it with mulch or gravel. Exposed matting degrades in the sun.

Why Weed Mat Garden Rolls

Why choose Weed Mat Garden Rolls?

  • It breathes

Water, air and nutrient pass through while light does not. That is the difference between a weed barrier and a dead bed.

  • No chemicals

It prevents weed growth physically, so nothing goes onto the soil, near the vegetables, or into the stormwater.

  • It holds moisture in

Under mulch, the mat slows evaporation from the soil surface as well — useful on sand through a Perth summer.

  • Four sizes

From a 9m² roll for a single bed to 90m² for a whole yard, in two widths, so there is one that suits without waste.

Using Weed Mat Garden Rolls

How to use Weed Mat Garden Rolls

  1. Weed the bed first

It stops what tries to come up; it does not kill an established weed with a root system already in place. Clear the bed before it goes down.

  2. Overlap the edges

Where two widths meet, overlap by a good hand's width. Weeds find butted joins with impressive reliability.

  3. Cut a cross for each plant

Rather than a hole. The flaps fold back around the stem and close in behind it, leaving nothing open for weeds.

  4. Cover it with mulch or gravel

Exposed matting degrades in the sun and looks like what it is. A layer over the top protects it and finishes the bed.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • It does not kill established weeds. Clear the bed first, or you are laying it over the problem.
  • It does not last forever, particularly if it is left uncovered. Sun degrades exposed matting, so cover it.
  • In a bed you plan to replant often, it becomes a nuisance — every new plant is another cut. For an annual vegetable bed, mulch alone is usually the better answer.
  • Over time, soil and organic matter build on top of the mat and weeds will germinate in that layer. It reduces weeding rather than ending it.

What people say

Weed Mat Garden Rolls questions

Weed Mat Garden Rolls FAQs

  • What sizes do the rolls come in?

    Four: 910mm x 10m (9m²), 1.8m x 10m (18m²), 910mm x 50m (45m²) and 1.8m x 50m (90m²). The wider roll crosses most beds in a single run.

  • What is the difference between weed mat and builder's plastic?

Weed mat breathes — water, air and nutrient pass through while light does not. Plastic blocks everything, which is right under a slab and wrong under a garden bed.

  • Will it kill the weeds already there?

No. It stops what tries to come up. Clear the bed first, or you are simply laying it over the problem.

  • Do I need to cover it?

Yes. Exposed matting degrades in the sun and looks like what it is. Mulch or gravel over the top protects it and finishes the bed.

  • How do I plant through it?

Cut a cross rather than a hole. The flaps fold back around the stem and close in behind, leaving nothing open for weeds.

  • Can I use it under gravel?

Yes, and it does a second job there — it stops the gravel sinking into the ground over a few years, which on Perth sand it otherwise will.

  • Will I never have to weed again?

It reduces weeding rather than ending it. Over time, soil and organic matter build up on top of the mat and weeds will germinate in that layer.

  • Can it be delivered?

Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs. Tell us which rolls and the address, and confirm the current delivery cost when you order.
