Set the line first
A string line for straights, a hose on the ground for curves. The edge follows what you set and it follows it permanently.
Choose the height for the job
Low against a lawn so the mower rides over it; deeper where it has to hold a real depth of gravel or mulch back. Ask what heights are in stock.
Stake it properly
Fixings are what stop an edge wandering. A long straight run with too few stakes bows outward under the weight of what it is holding.
Let it rust
The patina develops over the first months and there is nothing to do but wait. Do not seal it — sealing is what stops it doing the one thing it is for.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It stains while it patinas. Run-off from new weathering steel will mark light-coloured paving, limestone and concrete, so think about what it sits against and what water does around it.
- It is heavier than aluminium. Not a problem in the ground, but it is a consideration for a green roof or anywhere weight is counted.
- Heights and lengths vary with stock. Ring us with the run before you plan a job around a particular height.
- It is an edge, not a retaining wall. It holds a line and holds material back; it does not retain a level change of any consequence.
- The rust is the product. If you want an edge that stays looking the way it did on day one, this is the wrong one and the aluminium is the right one.
