Formline Tree Rings

A clean circle where the mower stops.

Formline pre-rolled steel tree rings, 2mm thick and 150mm high, in three diameters — 600mm, 900mm and 1200mm — and in either galvanised or weathering steel. They separate a trunk and its mulch from the lawn around it. Order-in only: allow about one to two weeks, and ring or email with the shape, size and quantity for pricing.

What Tree Rings suits

What can you use Tree Rings for?

  • Trees in a lawn

The main use. A ring gives the mower an edge to work to and keeps the whipper snipper away from the bark, which is what kills young trees.

  • Holding mulch where it belongs

Mulch around a tree without an edge migrates into the lawn. The ring keeps the bed intact and the mulch doing its job.

  • Feature planting

Filled with decorative stone or a dark mulch, a ring turns a tree in a lawn into a deliberate feature rather than an obstacle.

  • Small trees and narrow spaces

The 600mm ring suits smaller trees and tighter garden areas where a wider bed would crowd the space.

Which size ring?

Three diameters, all 150mm high

Formline rings come in three diameters and one height. Choose by the size of the tree and how much mulch bed you want around it — and allow room for the trunk to thicken.

All three are 2mm steel, pre-rolled, and available in galvanised or weathering steel. They are order-in only, so allow one to two weeks.

SizeDiameterWhat it suits
Compact150mm x 600mmSmaller trees, narrow garden areas, a tighter border.
Versatile150mm x 900mmLandscaped lawns and residential gardens. The mid-sized option.
Large150mm x 1200mmEstablished trees, and where you want a real mulch bed.

Order-in only — allow approximately one to two weeks after your order is confirmed. Ring or email with the shape, measurements and quantity for current pricing.

Why Tree Rings

Why choose Tree Rings?

  • Pre-rolled, so the circle is a circle

It arrives round. Bending a strip into an even circle on site is harder than it sounds and it shows when it is not quite right.

  • Two millimetre steel

Substantial enough to hold its shape against a wheelbarrow and a mower, year after year.

  • Two finishes, one product

Galvanised to disappear, weathering steel to become a rust-coloured feature. Choose by whether you want to see it.

  • Three diameters

600, 900 and 1200mm. Match the ring to the tree rather than making the tree fit the ring.

Getting Tree Rings home

How to get Tree Rings

Collect from the yard

Open seven days at 222 Barrington St, Bibra Lake. The loader puts it straight into your trailer or ute, and someone will tell you whether what you have brought will carry the load.

Borrow one of our trailers free for two hours to get your load home. No charge, no bond.

Have it delivered

Across Perth's southern suburbs, seven days. For a quote we need the address, how much you need, and anything awkward about access — tight driveways, low branches and side access all change which truck we send. Confirm the current cost when you order.

Using Tree Rings

How to use Tree Rings

  1. Order ahead

These are an order-in-only product. Allow approximately one to two weeks after your order is confirmed, and ring or email with the shape, measurements and quantity for current pricing.

  2. Size it to the tree, not to today

Trunks thicken and root plates spread. A ring that fits snugly now will be tight in a few years, so go a size up if the tree is young.

  3. Set it level and bed it in

Scribe the circle, take the turf out inside it, and set the ring so its top sits just below the mower's cut. Backfill the outside so the lawn meets it cleanly.

  4. Keep the mulch off the trunk

Fill the ring with mulch but leave a clear gap around the trunk itself. Mulch banked against bark holds moisture against it and rots it.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • Order-in only. Allow about one to two weeks after the order is confirmed — this is not something to pick up on the day.
  • Pricing is on request. Ring or email with the shape, measurements and quantity and we will quote it.
  • All three sizes are 150mm high. If you want a deeper bed than that, edging lengths are the more flexible answer.
  • Weathering steel is meant to rust. It will stain a light-coloured paver or a concrete edge as it patinas, so think about what it is sitting on.
  • A ring is not a root barrier. It defines a bed; it does not stop roots going where roots go.

Tree Rings questions

Tree Rings FAQs

  • What sizes do tree rings come in?

    Three diameters — 600mm, 900mm and 1200mm — and they are all 150mm high, in 2mm pre-rolled steel.

  • Galvanised or weathering steel?

Galvanised stays silver-grey and disappears into the garden. Weathering steel develops a rust-coloured patina over its first months and becomes a visible feature. Same ring either way.

  • How long do they take to arrive?

They are order-in only — allow approximately one to two weeks after your order is confirmed. Ring or email with the shape, size and quantity.

  • How much do they cost?

Pricing is on request, because it depends on the shape, the size and the quantity. Ring or email the team and we will quote it.

  • What size should I get for a young tree?

Go a size up from what fits today. Trunks thicken and root plates spread, and a ring that is snug now will be tight in a few years.

  • Should the mulch touch the trunk?

No. Fill the ring but leave a clear gap around the trunk itself — mulch banked against bark holds moisture against it and rots it.

  • Will the weathering steel stain my paving?

It can, as it patinas. That is worth thinking about if the ring sits against light-coloured paving or a concrete edge; galvanised avoids the question.

  • Can they be delivered?

Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs. Confirm the delivery cost when you place the order, since these come in specially anyway.
