What Black Marvel Fruit & Citrus Food suits
What can you use Black Marvel Fruit & Citrus Food for?
Citrus
Every six to eight weeks through the growing season, at 50 grams per square metre out to the drip line. This is the tree it is named for and the one it suits best.
Apples and pears
The same 50 grams per square metre, applied as the buds form rather than on the citrus cycle.
Stone fruit
At bud formation, and again as the fruit ripens. Two applications rather than a rolling cycle.
Established backyard trees
A 5kg bag does about 100 square metres, which is a great deal of fruit tree in a suburban garden.
How much fruit food?
Fifty grams a square metre, under the canopy
The rate is 50 grams per square metre of the area under the canopy, and it is the same for citrus, apples, pears and stone fruit. Only the timing changes between them.
A 5kg bag treats about 100 square metres, which is more backyard fruit tree than most gardens have.
| Tree | Per feed | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| A young citrus, 1m canopy | About 40g | Every six to eight weeks in the growing season. |
| An established citrus, 3m canopy | About 350g | Same cycle. Spread out to the drip line. |
| Apples and pears | 50g per m² | As the buds form. |
| Stone fruit | 50g per m² | At bud formation, and again as the fruit ripens. |
Keep the granules off the foliage — they burn leaves. Spread under the canopy out to the drip line, and water in properly so the soil wetter can work.
Black Marvel Fruit & Citrus Food in Perth
Yellow leaves on a Perth lemon tree
Backyard citrus is close to universal here and so is the complaint: the leaves go yellow between the veins while the veins themselves stay green. The instinct is to reach for more nitrogen, which is usually the wrong answer — that pattern is the signature of a magnesium or iron shortage, not a nitrogen one, and sandy soil leaches both.
This is the bag that carries all three. Fast-acting iron for leaf colour, and magnesium and calcium named on the pack as the trace elements. Feed at the proper rate out to the drip line, water it in so the wetter can work, and give it a few weeks. If the yellowing does not shift, bring us a photo of a leaf and we will have a look at it.
Why Black Marvel Fruit & Citrus Food
Why choose Black Marvel Fruit & Citrus Food?
Magnesium and calcium, named on the pack
Not just "trace elements". Magnesium is the specific one a yellowing citrus is usually short of, and it is in here.
High potash, very little phosphorus
12 nitrogen, 1 phosphorus, 8 potash. Potash is what goes into the fruit, and Richgro have led with it.
A soil wetter in the granules
It gets the feed down through dry sand instead of leaving it on the surface for the next sprinkler to move sideways.
One product across the fruit trees
Citrus, apples, pears and stone fruit all take the same 50 grams per square metre. Only the timing changes.

Using Black Marvel Fruit & Citrus Food
How to use Black Marvel Fruit & Citrus Food
Spread to the drip line
Fifty grams per square metre of the area under the canopy, not a handful at the trunk. The feeding roots are out at the edge of the canopy, which is where the rain lands.
Match the timing to the tree
Citrus every six to eight weeks through the growing season. Apples and pears as the buds form. Stone fruit at bud formation and again as the fruit ripens.
Keep the granules off the leaves
Same rule as the rose food — granules sitting on foliage burn it. Wash or brush strays off before you water in.
Water in properly
It gets the feed into the root zone and activates the soil wetter. On dry sand a feed that has not been watered in has effectively not been applied.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It is not a native plant food. Phosphorus is low at 1, but a native garden wants a food made for it.
- Do not apply it onto the leaves. Brush any strays off the foliage before you water in.
- Fifty grams a square metre is the rate for all of them. More does not mean more fruit, and a heavy application near the trunk can damage the tree.
- Pack sizes in this range vary. The one here is 5kg — ask what is on the pallet if you want a different size.
