Black Marvel Rose & Flower Food

Thirty grams a rose. That is the whole method.

Richgro's Black Marvel Rose & Flower Food is a granular feed at nitrogen 12, phosphorus 2 and potash 10, with fast-acting iron and a soil wetter. The rates are per plant rather than per square metre: 30 grams for an established in-ground rose, 10 grams for a new or bare-rooted one, half rate for miniatures and pots.

What Black Marvel Rose & Flower Food suits

What can you use Black Marvel Rose & Flower Food for?

  • Established garden roses

Thirty grams each, every four to eight weeks through the season. The rate is per plant, so there is nothing to measure out over an area.

  • Roses coming away after a prune

Start two to three weeks after pruning rather than the same day, then keep the cycle going until winter.

  • New and bare-rooted roses

Ten grams, not thirty. A new plant has far less root to take it up and the full rate is simply wasted or worse.

  • Flowering shrubs and annuals

The same 30 grams in the ground and 10 in a pot. It is not only for roses, whatever the picture on the bag says.

How much rose food?

Rated per plant, which makes it easy

Unlike most feeds, this one is measured per plant rather than per square metre. That removes most of the guesswork — you count roses, not metres.

A 2.5kg pack feeds over 75 established roses, which for a home garden is several seasons rather than one.

PlantRateWorth knowing
Established in-ground rose30gEvery four to eight weeks until winter.
New or bare-rooted rose10gFar less root to take it up. The full rate is wasted.

Never onto the foliage — the granules burn leaves. Spread to the drip line, at least 10cm clear of the base, and water in.

Why Black Marvel Rose & Flower Food

Why choose Black Marvel Rose & Flower Food?

  • High potash, low phosphorus

12 nitrogen, 2 phosphorus, 10 potash. Potash is the flowering nutrient and it is the one Richgro have led with here.

  • Rates per plant, not per area

Thirty grams a rose. No measuring out a bed, no working out how much of the bed a plant occupies — the easiest feed in the range to apply correctly.

  • Fast-acting iron

Aimed squarely at leaf colour. Yellowing between the veins on a rose is a common Perth complaint and iron is usually part of the answer.

  • It goes a very long way

Over 75 established roses from the 2.5kg pack. Very few home gardens will get through one in a season.

Using Black Marvel Rose & Flower Food

How to use Black Marvel Rose & Flower Food

  1. Start two to three weeks after pruning

Not the same day. Then feed every four to eight weeks until winter, which is the cycle the plant actually works to.

  2. Spread to the drip line, 10cm off the base

The feeding roots are out under the canopy, not against the stem. Granules banked at the base do nothing useful and can damage the plant.

  3. Never onto the foliage

The granules will burn leaves if they sit on them. Wash or brush any strays off before you water in.

  4. Not in the heat of the day

Early morning or late afternoon, with a good watering in behind it. A plant already stressed by heat does not want a feed on top of that.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • Not for Australian natives. It is a flowering plant food and there are native foods made for the job.
  • Do not apply it onto the foliage. Granules sitting on a leaf will burn it, so brush strays off before watering in.
  • The rate is per plant and it is not a suggestion. Thirty grams for an established in-ground rose, ten for a new or bare-rooted one, half rate in pots.
  • Pack sizes in this range vary. The one in the yard is 2.5kg — ask what is on the pallet if you want a different size rather than assuming.

What people say

Black Marvel Rose & Flower Food questions

Black Marvel Rose & Flower Food FAQs

  • How much do I give each rose?

Thirty grams for an established in-ground rose, ten for a new or bare-rooted one, and half the in-ground rate for miniatures and anything in a pot.

  • How often should I feed?

Every four to eight weeks until winter, starting two to three weeks after pruning rather than on the day you prune.

  • What is the analysis?

Nitrogen 12, phosphorus 2, potash 10, plus fast-acting iron and a soil wetter. High potash is the flowering component.

  • Can I use it on other flowering plants?

Yes. The same rates apply — 30 grams in the ground and 10 grams in a pot. Roses are on the bag because they sell it, not because they are the limit of it.

  • Why can't the granules touch the leaves?

They burn foliage if they sit on it. Spread to the drip line, keep 10cm clear of the base, and brush any strays off before you water in.

  • How many roses will a bag do?

The 2.5kg pack feeds over 75 established roses. In a home garden that is several seasons, not one.

  • Can I use it on natives?

No. It is a flowering plant food, and natives want a food made for them. Tell us what you are growing and we will point you at one.

  • Can it be delivered?

Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs. Tell us how many bags and the address, and confirm the current delivery cost when you order.
