What can you use Sheep Manure for?
The veggie patch
The classic use, and the one it is best at. High nitrogen is leaf and stem growth, which is exactly what a vegetable garden is trying to do.
Beds being prepared for planting
Worked through the top of a bed a week or two before planting, so the feed is in place and settled by the time roots go looking for it.
Established shrubs and fruit trees
Spread out to the drip line rather than piled against the trunk. Trees feed from the outer roots, not from the stem.
Topdressing tired soil
A thin layer watered in. Sandy ground loses organic matter every season and this is the cheapest way to keep putting it back.
How much sheep manure?
It goes on thin, and it goes on often
Manure is a top dressing rather than a mulch layer. About 25mm worked into the surface is what a bed wants, which is a great deal less than most people expect.
The bag does not print an application rate, so rather than invent one, these are simply what a given volume covers at that depth.

Bagged manure contains micro-organisms. Wear gloves, keep it moist while you handle it so it does not raise dust, and wash your hands afterwards.

Why manure matters more on Perth sand
The southern suburbs sit on free-draining sand that holds very little nutrient and almost no organic matter. Water and feed both travel straight through it, which is why a bed that looked well fed in autumn can be hungry again by spring.
Composted manure works on both problems at once. The nutrient feeds this season and the organic matter stays behind, holding moisture and giving roots something to work in. Two thin feeds a year, watered in, will change a sandy bed measurably inside a couple of seasons.

Across Perth's southern suburbs, seven days. For a quote we need the address, how much you need, and anything awkward about access — tight driveways, low branches and side access all change which truck we send. Confirm the current cost when you order.

Using Sheep Manure
How to use Sheep Manure
Spread it thin
About 25mm, worked into the top of the soil. Manure is a top dressing, not a mulch layer, and far less goes on than most people load into the trailer.
Keep it off the stems
Around young plants especially. Feed belongs where the roots are working, which is out from the plant rather than against it.
Water it in
Straight after spreading. It gets the nutrient down to the root zone and stops the surface drying to a crust that sheds the next watering.
Feed little and often
Sandy soil does not hold a big feed — it leaches. Two thin applications through a growing season do more than one heavy one, and cost the same.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It is a feed, not a soil. It goes ON a bed or THROUGH the top of one; it does not fill a bed. That is a soil blend.
- Raw sheep manure burns. Ours is composted so it does not, but if you are ever offered manure straight out of a paddock, give it several months before it goes near a garden.
- Bagged manure contains micro-organisms. Wear gloves, keep the product moist so it does not raise dust, and wash your hands afterwards.
