Bibra Lake Soils

Soil Solver Clay Plus Minerals

Turns sand into soil, permanently.

Soil Solver Clay Plus Minerals is mineral-enhanced kaolin clay and silt, over 50% clay, with no artificial fertilisers or fillers. It is a one-off change rather than a seasonal treatment: worked into sand it stays there, holding water and nutrient that would otherwise drain straight past the roots.

What Soil Solver Clay Plus Minerals suits

What can you use Soil Solver Clay Plus Minerals for?

  • New garden beds

The best time to do it, because the bed is open and you can work the clay right through rather than around established roots.

  • Established beds that dry out

Two passes of 5kg/m², alternating applying and watering. Slower than doing it at the start, and it still works.

  • Water-repellent sand

Soil Solver claim it cures water repellence, which is the specific Perth problem where water runs off dry sand instead of soaking in.

  • Anywhere you are tired of watering

Clay is what makes a bed hold what you put on it. Everything else is treating the symptom.

How much Soil Solver do you need?

Rates look high because you are changing the soil

You are not dressing a bed here, you are changing what it is made of, which is why the numbers are larger than a fertiliser rate and why Soil Solver publish a staged programme rather than a single dose.

Everything below is Soil Solver's own. Their FAQ figure and their per-square-metre rate imply different amounts, so both are here rather than whichever reads better.

JobRateWhat that means in bags
A new bed, their FAQ figureOne 22.5kg bag per 2m²About 11kg/m². The straightforward number if you want one.
Starting rate, per square metre5kg/m²A 22.5kg bag covers about 4.5m² at this rate — roughly twice as far.
A permanent cure10 to 25kg/m²Built up over several passes, not applied in one go.

It is about a tonne per cubic metre, so a 22.5kg bag weighs what it says and a trailer load is a serious load. Follow it with compost and mulch — clay gives the soil the ability to hold nutrient, it does not supply any.

Soil Solver Clay Plus Minerals in Perth

Why clay is the Perth answer

Almost every garden problem on the coastal plain traces back to the same thing: the soil is sand, and sand holds neither water nor nutrient. Everything you put on it is on a timer.

Clay is the only thing that changes that permanently. Compost breaks down and needs replacing, wetting agents last about six months, and mulch slows evaporation without giving the soil anything to hold onto. Clay stays.

It is also why the rates look high. You are not dressing a bed, you are changing what it is made of, and Soil Solver's staged programme exists because that is a lot of material to introduce at once.

Why Soil Solver Clay Plus Minerals

Why choose Soil Solver Clay Plus Minerals?

  • It is permanent

Clay does not break down and it does not wash away. This is the one product in the yard you buy once for a bed rather than every season, which changes the arithmetic completely.

  • Over 50% clay, with minerals

Mineral-enhanced kaolin clay and silt, with ten trace elements listed on the bag. No artificial fertilisers and no fillers making up the weight.

  • It cures water repellence

Soil Solver's own claim, and it is the failure mode of Perth sand — water beading on the surface and running to the low corner instead of soaking in.

  • Western Australian

Made here, for this soil. It is not a product designed for somewhere else and sold into this market.

Using Soil Solver Clay Plus Minerals

How to use Soil Solver Clay Plus Minerals

  1. Spread it, then water it

Spread at the rate you are working to and water it in. The water is what starts the clay dispersing through the sand rather than sitting on it.

  2. Blend it into the top 10cm

A hand hoe through the top 10 centimetres. Clay left as a layer is a layer; blended, it coats the sand grains, which is the mechanism.

  3. Alternate applying and watering

Their own method for building up to a cure: apply, water, apply again. Trying to put 20kg/m² down in one pass does not work as well as three passes of the same total.

  4. Follow with compost and mulch

Clay gives the soil something to hold water and nutrient with. Compost gives it something to hold. They are not alternatives.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • It is dense, about a tonne per cubic metre. A trailer of it is a very different load from a trailer of mulch — check what yours is rated to carry.
  • It is not a fertiliser. It carries trace elements but no NPK is published and none is claimed, so a hungry bed still wants feeding.
  • A full cure at 10 to 25kg/m² is a lot of material and a lot of work. Doing it in stages is the manufacturer's own advice, not a shortcut.
  • It does not replace organic matter. Clay holds nutrient; compost and manure provide it. A bed treated with clay and never fed is a bed that holds nothing.

What people say

Soil Solver Clay Plus Minerals questions

Soil Solver Clay Plus Minerals FAQs

  • What does Soil Solver actually do?

It puts clay into sand. Sand holds neither water nor nutrient because there is nothing in it to hold them with; clay is what does that, and unlike compost it does not break down, so it is a one-off change.

  • How much do I need?

Five kilograms per square metre to start, built up over stages. A permanent cure is 10 to 25kg/m². Soil Solver's own FAQ puts one 22.5kg bag at about 2m² for a new bed.

  • Is it a fertiliser?

No. It carries ten trace elements but there is no published NPK and we are not going to invent one. It gives the soil the ability to hold nutrient — you still have to provide the nutrient.

  • Will it fix water repellent sand?

Soil Solver claim it cures water repellence, which is the Perth failure where water beads on dry sand and runs off. Clay changes the surface of the sand grains, which is the mechanism behind that claim.

  • Soil Solver or Bentonite?

Both are clay and both are permanent. Soil Solver brings a mineral package and a staged programme; bentonite is a purer single clay with a very high nutrient-holding capacity. Ask us with a specific bed in mind.

  • How do I apply it?

Spread, water, then blend into the top 10cm with a hand hoe, alternating applying and watering. Two passes of 5kg/m² on an established garden.

  • Is it heavy?

Very. About a tonne per cubic metre, so a 22.5kg bag is a real 22.5kg and a trailer load is a serious load. Check what yours is rated for.

  • Can it be delivered?

Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs. Tell us how many bags and the address, and confirm the current delivery cost when you order.
