Soil Conditioner Perth

Organic matter for tired Perth sand.

A soil conditioner is composted organic matter you dig into the soil you already have. It helps sand hold water and nutrients, and it feeds the worms and microbes that keep soil healthy. We sell it loose by the cubic metre and in bags, from a 20 litre bag up to an 800 litre bulk bag.

Our loose Soil Conditioner and Mushroom Compost are sold by the cubic metre, and five more come in bags. Aussie Organics has a wetting agent, which helps water soak into dry sand, and Gingin Gold is manure and seaweed composted together. The rest are mushroom compost, pig manure composted for over a year, and compost with clay and rock minerals.

How much soil conditioner do you need?

What a metre or a bag will cover

Measure the bed in square metres first. The loose and 30 litre figures are for a 25mm layer, about the thickness of a finger, before you dig it through.

Dig it into the top of the soil rather than leaving it on the surface, so it ends up where the roots are.

AmountWhich conditionersRoughly what it covers
1 cubic metre, looseSoil Conditioner and Mushroom CompostAbout 40 square metres at 25mm deep.
30 litre bagAussie Organics, Gingin Gold and Aussie Organic Mushroom CompostAbout 1.2 square metres at 25mm deep.

2 to 5 litres per square metreSoil Solver Compost Plus MineralsSoil Solver's own rate for garden beds.

A cubic metre is about 33 of the 30 litre bags, so past a few beds the loose product is the easier buy. Bring the size of your bed to the counter and we will work out how much of the one you choose.

How to choose a soil conditioner

Four things that actually decide it

  • How much ground you are covering

For one bed or a few pots, buy bags. For several beds, a lawn or a whole garden, buy it loose by the cubic metre. A cubic metre spread 25mm deep covers about 40 square metres, roughly 33 of the 30 litre bags.

  • What the soil is doing

If water beads off the top, look at Aussie Organics, which has a wetting agent in it. If the ground is hard and tight, look at Gingin Gold. If the sand dries out within a day, it needs organic matter dug through it, and every conditioner we sell adds that.

  • What you are growing

Aussie Organic Mushroom Compost suits veggies, vines and fruit trees. It is not recommended for azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons and some natives, which prefer acid soil. If those are in the bed, ask us at the counter which conditioner to use instead.

  • Whether you also want to feed

Aussie Organics Premium Soil Conditioner is not a fertiliser: it changes what the soil can hold rather than feeding the plant. Gingin Gold, Piggypost and Compost Plus Minerals carry nutrients as well, and both mushroom composts release nutrients as they break down.

Soil conditioner FAQs

What we get asked at the counter

  • What is a soil conditioner?

Composted organic matter that you dig into the soil you already have. It helps sandy soil hold water and nutrients, and it feeds the worms and microbes that keep soil healthy. A garden mix is different: you use a mix to fill an empty bed.

  • Is soil conditioner the same as compost?

Most soil conditioners are compost. Our loose Soil Conditioner and Mushroom Compost are both made to AS 4454, the Australian Standard for compost and soil conditioners. Some bagged ones add other things, such as a wetting agent, composted manures or clay and rock minerals.

  • What is the difference between a soil conditioner and a soil improver?

The conditioners are the organic ones: composts and composted manures. Our soil improvers range also takes in clays such as bentonite, which change sand permanently, plus soil wetters and lime. Many gardens use both, clay once and then a conditioner when the soil looks tired.

  • Should I dig soil conditioner in or leave it on top?

Dig it into the top of the soil. For the bagged Aussie Organics conditioner, mix it through the top 100 to 150mm. Both mushroom composts also work spread on top as a mulch. For the bagged Aussie Organic Mushroom Compost, lay it 50 to 75mm deep and keep it clear of the stems.

  • Can I use soil conditioner on my lawn?

Yes. Our loose Soil Conditioner suits top-dressing lawns, which means spreading a thin layer over the grass, as well as garden beds.

  • Can I use mushroom compost around every plant?

Not the bagged Aussie Organic Mushroom Compost. It is not recommended for azaleas, camellias, rhododendrons and some natives, which prefer acid soil. Use it on veggies, vines, fruit trees and established beds, and ask us at the counter about the loose Mushroom Compost for your plants.

  • How much soil conditioner do I need?

Measure the bed in square metres. A cubic metre spread 25mm deep covers about 40 square metres, and a 30 litre bag about 1.2 square metres. Bring the measurements to the counter and we will work it out for the one you choose.

  • Are the bags heavy?

Some are. A full bag of Gingin Gold weighs 35 to 40kg by the maker's figure, and a 20 litre bag of Piggypost about 11kg. If lifting is a problem, tell us at the counter and we will load it for you.
