Bibra Lake Soils

Aussie Organics Premium Soil Conditioner

Carbon, in the one place Perth soil has none.

Mature compost in a 30 litre bag, with a wetting agent and trace elements blended through it. Aussie Organics call it a blend of selected well composted materials, rich in organic carbon that works like a sponge, storing water and nutrients. It is a conditioner, not a fertiliser.

What Aussie Organics Premium Soil Conditioner suits

What can you use Aussie Organics Premium Soil Conditioner for?

  • Digging through a new bed

The best time to do it, because you can get it through the whole root zone rather than working around established plants.

  • Vegetable gardens

Veggie beds are worked hard and lose organic matter fastest. This goes back in between crops.

  • Around established shrubs and trees

Spread out to the drip line and lightly forked in, keeping it off the trunk.

  • Sand that has stopped taking water

The wetting agent is in the bag for exactly this — the dry patch where water beads up and runs off sideways.

How many bags?

30 litres, and what it improves

Conditioner is sold by volume, so the sum is area times the depth you are spreading before you dig it in.

There is no published rate for this bag, so the rows below are arithmetic at named depths. For a specific bed, ask at the counter.

JobSpread depthWhat a 30 litre bag does
Improving an existing bed25mmAbout 1.2 square metres.
A new bed, dug through50mmAbout 0.6 square metres.
Around an established treeLight, to the drip lineOne bag per small tree, kept off the trunk.

Doing it every year matters more than doing it thickly once. Organic matter in Perth sand is a subscription, not a purchase.

Aussie Organics Premium Soil Conditioner in Perth

Why sand needs this every year

Organic matter breaks down faster in warm sandy soil than in almost any other ground, and Perth gives it warmth, air and drainage all at once. A bed conditioned in autumn will have lost much of it by the following summer.

That is not a fault in the product, it is the nature of sand. The way through is both halves: compost or conditioner each year for the biology, and a clay once for the mineral structure that does not break down.

Why Aussie Organics Premium Soil Conditioner

Why choose Aussie Organics Premium Soil Conditioner?

  • Mature, not raw

Raw compost keeps composting in your bed and borrows nitrogen from the plants while it does. Mature material is finished, so it feeds instead of competing.

  • Organic carbon is the whole point

It is what holds water and nutrients in the root zone. Nothing else in a bag does that job, and Perth sand starts with almost none.

  • Wetting agent through the bag

Compost alone will not rewet a hydrophobic patch quickly. The wetter gets the water in so the compost can hold it.

  • Trace elements included

The minor nutrients that nobody thinks about until a plant goes yellow between the veins.

Using Aussie Organics Premium Soil Conditioner

How to use Aussie Organics Premium Soil Conditioner

  1. Get it into the top 100 to 150mm

Spread it and turn it in. A conditioner left lying on the surface dries out and does nothing for roots that are 150mm down.

  2. Wet the ground first if it is repelling water

On a bad dry patch, water it, let it sit, water again. Digging conditioner into ground that water cannot enter puts it somewhere it cannot work.

  3. Around established plants, stay shallow

Fork it into the top of the soil out at the drip line rather than digging near the trunk. Most feeder roots are further out than people expect.

  4. Mulch over the top

Bare improved soil dries out and oxidises in a Perth summer. Mulch keeps the work you just did.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • It is not a fertiliser. If a plant is hungry right now, a manure or a fertiliser feeds it — this changes what the soil can hold.
  • It is not permanent. Organic matter breaks down and has to be topped up, which is the difference between this and a clay such as bentonite or Soil Solver.
  • Aussie Organics publish no application rate. The figure on this page is arithmetic on 30 litres at a stated depth, not a recommendation.
  • For more than a couple of beds, bulk soil conditioner by the cubic metre is far cheaper. It is a different product to this bag, so ask which one suits.
  • The pack carries a health warning: garden soils contain micro-organisms that may be harmful. Gloves, keep it damp while you work, do not breathe it in, wash your hands afterwards.

Aussie Organics Premium Soil Conditioner questions

Aussie Organics Premium Soil Conditioner FAQs

  • What is the difference between a soil conditioner and a fertiliser?

A fertiliser feeds the plant now. A conditioner changes what the soil can hold, so the feeding you do lasts. In Perth sand you generally need both, and the conditioner is what makes the fertiliser worth buying.

  • How much does a bag cover?

Spread 25mm thick, 30 litres does about 1.2 square metres. That is arithmetic on the volume rather than a manufacturer rate — Aussie Organics do not publish one.

  • Can I use it on any soil?

Aussie Organics pitch it as an organic base for all types of soils. It is at its most useful on sand, which is where the carbon is missing in the first place.

  • Do I still need a wetting agent?

There is one in the bag already. On a badly water-repellent patch a separate soil wetter still helps, because it goes on the surface and this goes through the soil.

  • How often should I do it?

Once a year is a fair rule in Perth. Organic matter breaks down fast in warm sand, so it is a job you repeat rather than one you finish.
