  Soil that has grown the same thing for years runs down. Working compost through it restores organic matter and microbial activity, which is what makes the difference between soil and dirt.

  Garden beds that are full but underperforming

  Where the bed is at the right level and the plants are simply sulking, this is the product. You are improving what is in the bed rather than adding to the top of it.

  Vegetable patches between crops

  The client lists vegetable patches specifically. Vegetables take a lot out of a bed in a season, and turning compost through it before the next crop goes in is the standard way to give it back.

  Topdressing a lawn

  It is listed for lawns too, where it adds organic matter and moisture holding to the top layer. It will not level anything — for that, Special Lawn Mix is the one with the body to fill hollows.

This is the product Perth's ground argues for more than any other in the range. Most of the southern suburbs sit on deep, free-draining sand that holds almost no organic matter, so water and nutrients travel straight down through it and past the roots that were meant to get them.

Sand that has dried out repeatedly makes it worse by going water-repellent, where water beads on the surface and runs into the cracks instead of soaking in. Adding organic matter is the standard local answer to both problems, and that is precisely what this is.

It is also why the client calls it water wise. Under a sprinkler roster, the water a soil holds between watering turns is the water the plant actually gets, and organic matter is what does the holding.

One honest caveat. If your sand is badly repellent, compost alone will improve it but is unlikely to cure it — the products that change the sand itself are clay-based, or a wetting agent. Describe what the water is doing when you call and you will get a straight answer about which order to do things in.

• What is the difference between Soil Conditioner and a soil mix?+

  A mix fills a bed and gives plants something to grow in. A conditioner improves soil you already have. If the bed is empty you want a mix; if the bed is full and the soil in it is tired, you want this, dug through the top layer.

• What is Soil Conditioner made from?+

  100% organic compost — no fillers and no sand making up the volume. It is produced to Australian Standard AS 4454, the standard covering composted soil conditioners, and it is a WALGA preferred product.

• How much Soil Conditioner do I need?+

  We do not publish an application rate, and we would rather say that than invent one. Bring the area you are covering — square metres, not cubic — to the counter or put it in an enquiry, and we will work through the quantity with you.

• Will Soil Conditioner fix water-repellent sand?+

  It will improve it, and on mild repellence that may be enough. Where sand has gone properly waxy, the products that change the sand itself are clay-based, like bentonite or Soil Solver, or a wetting agent. Tell us what the water is doing and we will tell you the order to do it in.

• Can I use Soil Conditioner on my lawn?+

  Yes, as a topdressing — it adds organic matter and moisture holding to the top layer. It will not level a bumpy lawn, though. Special Lawn Mix has the sand and body to fill hollows, and plenty of lawns want conditioning first and levelling second.

• Can I just spread it on top and leave it?+

  You can, but then it is working as a mulch rather than a conditioner and you are not getting what you paid for. Mixing it into the existing soil is the step that does the job. If you would rather not dig, Mushroom Compost is blended to work either way.

• How often should I use Soil Conditioner?+

  The client's advice is that regular use is what builds and holds a nutrient-rich soil. Soil consumes organic matter over time, particularly on sand, so treat it as something you do each season rather than once.

• Can I collect Soil Conditioner myself?+

  Yes. The yard is open seven days and the loader puts it straight into your trailer or ute. If you do not have a trailer you can borrow one of ours free for two hours — yard to your home, no tip trips, and first in best dressed.

• Can Soil Conditioner be delivered?+

  Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs, seven days. The address, the quantity and whether the truck can get in are what decide the quote, so mention tight driveways, low branches or side access. Confirm the current delivery cost when you order.
