Richgro's granular vegetable feed in a 5kg bag: nitrogen 11, phosphorus 1, potassium 7 and sulphur 16, with trace elements and a soil wetter through it. What can you use Plus Tomato & Vegetable Fertiliser for?

  • Tomatoes and fruiting vegetables

    The named use. Seven potassium behind eleven nitrogen is the shape a fruiting crop wants — growth first, then something to put into the fruit.

  • Leafy greens and brassicas

    Nitrogen-led suits anything you are growing for its leaves. Same bag, same rate, no second product.

How much fertiliser?

Twenty to fifty grams a square metre

The rate is 20 to 50 grams per square metre, three times through the season — early spring, mid summer and autumn. The lower end is plenty for a bed that has been fed recently.

A 5kg bag at the middle of that range covers roughly 140 square metres of bed per application, which is a great deal more vegetable garden than most people have.

How to use Plus Tomato & Vegetable Fertiliser

  1. Get compost through the bed first

    Before you plant. A granular feed works on a soil that can hold it, and on sand that means organic matter going in before the fertiliser does.

  2. Spread out to the drip line

    Keeping the granules at least 10cm clear of the stems. Fertiliser banked against a stem burns it, and the roots doing the feeding are further out anyway.

  3. Twenty to fifty grams a square metre

    The lower end is plenty for a bed that has been fed recently. Early spring, mid summer and autumn, or whenever the bed asks for it.

  4. Water in well

    It gets the feed into the root zone and the soil wetter working. Then avoid the dust, keep it off your skin, and wash your hands when you are done.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • It is a fertiliser, not a soil improver. It feeds a crop; it does not fix a bed that dries out and cannot hold what you put in it.
  • Not formulated for Australian natives. It is low in phosphorus at 1, but there are native plant foods made for the job and that is what a native bed wants.
  • Rate matters. Fifty grams a square metre is the top of the range, not a starting point, and granules against a stem will burn it.
  • Avoid the dust and keep it off your skin. Wash your hands once you have finished spreading.

    Only if you overdo it or let the granules sit against the stems. Spread out to the drip line, keep 10cm clear of the base, stay inside the rate, and water in.

  • How long does a bag last?

    A 5kg bag is about 140 square metres per application at the middle of the rate. In a home vegetable garden that is several seasons.
