What can you use Builder’s Plastic Roll for?
Concrete underlay and vapour barrier
The main job. Laid under a slab it stops ground moisture rising into the concrete and, later, into whatever goes on top of it.
Dust and weather protection
Temporary cover over an opening, a stack of materials or a section of a site. Two hundred micron holds up to wind better than a light drop sheet.
Floor and furniture cover
Renovation work. It is far tougher than a painter's drop sheet and it does not let anything through.
Ground cover and weed suppression
Under gravel or a storage area. For a planted bed, weed mat is the better answer — it breathes and this does not.
How much plastic?
A roll is a hundred square metres
Fifty metres by two is 100 square metres per roll. Work out the area you are covering, then add for the overlaps at every join — they are not optional under a slab.
The roll is 2 metres wide, so anything wider than that needs two runs and an overlap between them.

It does not breathe. Under a planted garden bed use weed mat instead — plastic will stop water reaching the roots.

How to use Builder’s Plastic Roll
Lay it on a clean surface
Sharp stones and stray reo will puncture it, and a punctured vapour barrier is not a vapour barrier. Clear the ground before it goes down.
Overlap the joins generously
Where two widths meet, overlap rather than butt them together. A join that is only touching is a path for moisture.
Run it up the edges
Under a slab, take it up the sides of the formwork rather than stopping at the perimeter, so the barrier is continuous where the slab meets the ground.
Weight it down while you work
Two hundred micron catches wind like a sail across a hundred square metres. Bricks or offcuts around the edges as you go.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It does not breathe. Under a garden bed it stops water reaching the roots and stops the soil breathing — that is what weed mat is for.
- It punctures. Sharp stones, star pickets and dropped tools go through it, and under a slab a puncture defeats the purpose.
- It is a roll of sheeting, not an engineered damp-proof membrane. If a specification calls for a particular membrane to a standard, bring us the spec.
- A hundred square metres of plastic is unwieldy in the wind. Two people and some weights make it a much shorter job.
