It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

Using Recycled Road Base
How to use Recycled Road Base
Work out the compacted volume
Length by width by depth in metres, plus a margin. Material loses volume as it compacts, so the loose load is more than the finished layer looks like.
Strip the ground first
Take off the topsoil and anything organic. A base compacted over soft ground compacts the softness with it and keeps settling afterwards.
Compact in layers
Layer by layer rather than one thick lift. A thick lift goes hard on top and stays loose underneath, and the surface tells you about it later.
Damp it as you go
Slightly damp material compacts properly. Bone dry never quite locks up however many passes you make.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It does not drain. The fines that make it compact are the fines that hold water — a soak well wants clean stone, not a base material.
- It is a mixed grey and the shade varies with the batch, because the input does. Under pale paving that can read through the joints, which is what the limestone is for.
- It is a base, not a surface. Left exposed it erodes and ruts; it wants paving, concrete or at least a sealed finish over it.
- Council crossover requirements vary and they are not ours to state. If the job is the section between the road and your property, check with your council before you order.
