How much Red Road Gravel do you need?
Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.
It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

How to use Red Road Gravel
Work out the compacted volume
Length by width by depth in metres, plus a margin for compaction. The calculator below does the first part.
Strip and prepare the ground
Topsoil and organic material off first. Compacting over soft ground compacts the softness too, and it keeps settling.
Compact in layers
Layer by layer, damp rather than dry. A thick lift compacts on top and stays loose underneath.
If it is the finished surface, edge it
A compacted gravel surface holds far better with an edge on it. Without one it spreads sideways over a few years and thins in the middle.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It does not drain. Like every compactable base, the fines that make it work are the fines that hold water — clean stone is the drainage material.
- Red is a commitment where a base is showing. It suits warm-toned and rural settings and it can look out of place against cool grey render.
- As a finished surface it wants maintaining. Compacted gravel needs an occasional top-up and re-compact where traffic thins it.
- Council crossover requirements vary and they are not ours to state. Check with yours before building the section between the road and your property.
