19mm Crushed Limestone

The local base material, and the one crossovers are built on.

19mm Crushed Limestone is a compactable road base material used under paving, driveways and at crossover points. It compacts into a strong, level foundation, it is clean and easy to work with, and it is the material most of Perth's hard landscaping sits on.

What 19mm Crushed Limestone suits

What can you use 19mm Crushed Limestone for?

  • Under paving

The standard base under pavers, compacted and screeded level before the bedding sand goes on. Get this layer right and the paving stays right.

  • Driveway crossovers

The section between the road and your property, which councils have their own requirements for. Check what yours specifies before you build it.

  • Driveways and hardstand

Anywhere a vehicle is going to sit or turn. Compacted limestone spreads that load instead of letting it punch into the sand.

  • Paths and level areas

It can be a finished surface in its own right on a path or a rural drive, compacted and left as it is.

How much 19mm Crushed Limestone

How much 19mm Crushed Limestone do you need?

Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.

It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

Whatever you work out here lands in the enquiry form below, already written down.

That is about one trailer load. Order a touch over rather than under — a second trip costs more than the extra scoop.

19mm Crushed Limestone in Perth

Why limestone is the default base in Perth

Perth is built on limestone. It is quarried locally, it is what the trades here have used for generations, and it is what most council crossover specifications are written around — so choosing it is often the path of least resistance as well as the right material.

The pale colour matters more here than it would elsewhere, because so much Perth paving is cream limestone or a light concrete paver. A dark base under pale paving can read through the joints, and a limestone base does not.

It also sits well against the ground it is going into. Limestone base over limestone sand behaves predictably, which is not always true of a material brought in from a different geology.

Why 19mm Crushed Limestone

Why choose 19mm Crushed Limestone?

  • It compacts hard

The fines lock the larger pieces together under a plate compactor. That is the whole job of a base material, and a clean stone cannot do it.

  • Local material

Limestone is what this part of the world is made of. It has not been trucked in from another state, and it behaves the way local trades expect.

  • Pale, so it does not shadow

A cream base under light paving keeps the joints looking clean. A dark base can read through a pale paver over time.

  • Cost-effective for the volume

A base layer is a lot of material. Limestone is the sensible way to buy that volume without compromising on what it does.

How to get 19mm Crushed Limestone

Collect from the yard

Open seven days at 222 Barrington St, Bibra Lake. The loader puts it straight into your trailer or ute, and someone will tell you whether what you have brought will carry the load.

Borrow one of our trailers free for two hours to get your load home. No charge, no bond.

Have it delivered

Across Perth's southern suburbs, seven days. For a quote we need the address, how much you need, and anything awkward about access — tight driveways, low branches and side access all change which truck we send. Confirm the current cost when you order.

Using 19mm Crushed Limestone

How to use 19mm Crushed Limestone

  1. Work out the volume

Length by width by the compacted depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. Order a little over: material loses volume when it compacts, so the loose delivery is more than the finished layer looks like.

  2. Check the crossover spec first

If the job is a crossover, your council sets the requirements — depth, material and sometimes who can build it. Find that out before you order rather than after.

  3. Lay it in layers and compact each one

Spread and compact in layers rather than dumping the full depth and rolling once. A thick lift compacts on top and stays loose underneath.

  4. Water it as you compact

Slightly damp material compacts far better than bone dry. It is the difference between a base that goes hard and one that never quite does.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • It is not a drainage material. The fines that make it compact are the same fines that stop water passing through it, so a soak well wants Blue Metal instead.
  • Compacted depth is not delivered depth. Material loses volume as it compacts, so order over rather than exactly.
  • It is not a finished decorative surface for a formal area. As a rural drive or a utility path it is fine; as a feature it is a working material.
  • Council crossover requirements vary and they are not ours to state. Check with yours before you build the section between the road and your property.

19mm Crushed Limestone questions

19mm Crushed Limestone FAQs

  • What is 19mm crushed limestone used for?

It is a compactable road base — the layer that goes under paving, driveways and crossovers to give them a solid, level foundation. It can also be a finished surface on a path or a rural drive.

  • How deep should the base be?

It depends entirely on what is going on top and what the ground underneath is like, and for a crossover your council sets it. Tell us the job at the counter rather than working to a number off a web page.

  • Does crushed limestone drain?

No, and it is not meant to. The fines that let it compact are the same fines that hold water. If drainage is what you need, Blue Metal is the clean stone for it.

  • Crushed limestone or recycled road base?

Same structural job. Limestone where the pale colour matters or a crossover spec calls for it; recycled road base where it will be buried and you would rather have the saving.

  • How much should I order?

Length by width by compacted depth in metres, and then a bit over — material loses volume when it compacts, so the loose load is more than the finished layer. The calculator on this page does the first part.

  • Should I wet it before compacting?

Yes. Slightly damp material compacts far better than bone dry, and it is often the difference between a base that goes hard and one that never quite sets up.

  • Can I collect it myself?

Yes, seven days. It is heavy, so check what your trailer is rated to carry — you can borrow one of ours free for two hours.

  • Can crushed limestone be delivered?

Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs. Tell us the address, how much and where it can be tipped, and confirm the current delivery cost when you order.
