Brickies Sand

The sand that makes mortar behave.

Brickies Sand is a finely textured masonry sand for brick and block laying, rendering and general construction. Its grain size is what gives mortar its workability — the reason a bricklayer asks for it by name rather than taking whatever sand is closest.

What Brickies Sand suits

What can you use Brickies Sand for?

  • Brick and block laying

The job it is graded for. Mortar made with it stays workable on the board and bonds properly to the brick, which is the difference between laying and fighting.

  • Rendering

The fine, consistent grain gives a smoother finish than a coarser sand. For a really fine finish coat, plasterers sand is finer again.

  • Retaining walls and limestone block work

Any masonry that needs bedding and pointing. It is the sand that goes with the brickies mortar mixes on the mortar page.

  • General construction and landscaping

It is versatile beyond bricklaying — bedding, backfill and general site work where a clean, consistent sand is wanted.

How much Brickies Sand

How much Brickies Sand do you need?

Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.

It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

Whatever you work out here lands in the enquiry form below, already written down.

That is about one trailer load. Order a touch over rather than under — a second trip costs more than the extra scoop.

Why Brickies Sand

Why choose Brickies Sand?

  • It is graded for mortar, not for fill

The grain size is chosen for cohesion and workability. That is a specification, not a description, and it is why substituting a cheaper sand shows up in the wall.

  • Strong bond, less weathering

Mixed correctly it makes a mortar with a higher resistance to weathering, which matters on anything exposed — and Perth exposes most things.

  • It mixes easily

The grain size blends readily with cement, so you get a consistent mix without fighting the mixer. On a long day that is a real difference.

  • It takes a little movement

Mortar made with it accommodates minor shifts rather than cracking at the first sign of one, which is what you want in a wall built on sand.

Using Brickies Sand

How to use Brickies Sand

  1. Work out the volume

Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. The calculator further down does the arithmetic, and it is worth rounding up.

  2. Mix one cement to four sand

That is the client's own standard mortar ratio. Adjust for the consistency you want, and add lime or use a pre-blended brickies mix where the job calls for it.

  3. Check what the job actually needs first

Masonry has a code behind it. External brickwork within a kilometre of the coast wants an M4 mortar, and a lot of Perth is inside that. Ask before you mix rather than after you have laid.

  4. Keep the pile covered and clean

Sand picks up whatever is around it. A tarp keeps leaves and grit out, and grit in a mortar shows up as a poor bond and a rough finish.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • It is not a plastering sand. For a fine finish coat, plasterers sand is finer again and will not show the grain the way this can.
  • It is not a paving or bedding sand for a driveway. A load-bearing bed wants the coarser aggregates and roadbase from the aggregates page under it.
  • It is not a play sand. White washed sand is the triple-washed one for sandpits and playgrounds, and that distinction matters.
  • The 1:4 ratio is a starting point, not a specification. If the job has an engineer or a code behind it, the ratio comes from them and not from a web page.

Brickies Sand questions

Brickies Sand FAQs

  • What is the mix ratio for brickies sand?

One part cement to four parts sand is the standard mortar mix, adjusted for the consistency you want. If the job has a code or an engineer behind it, take the ratio from them — external brickwork near the coast in particular has its own requirement.

  • Can I use brickies sand for rendering?

Yes, and plenty of jobs do. Its fine, consistent grain gives a smooth finish. Where the finish is the whole point of the job, plasterers sand is finer again and worth the swap.

  • What is the difference between brickies sand and plasterers sand?

Grain size, and it decides the job. Brickies sand is graded for mortar — cohesion and workability on the trowel. Plasterers sand is finer, screened for render, and it cracks less as it dries. Using the wrong one shows up at the finishing stage.

  • Can I use brickies sand under pavers?

Not as the structural bed. A paved area wants a compacted roadbase or crushed limestone underneath it from the aggregates page. Ask at the counter and describe whether it is a path or a driveway, because the answers differ.

  • How much brickies sand do I need?

Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres, and the calculator on this page does it. Bring the number down and we will tell you whether it is a trailer load, a bulka bag or a truck.

  • Do you sell the mortar mix as well?

Yes. Brickies Grey and Brickies Lite are cement and lime pre-blended, so you add this sand and water. The Creme Mortar Pre-Mix already has the sand in it and only needs water — worth knowing for a small job.

  • Can I collect brickies sand myself?

Yes, seven days. Sand is heavy, so check what your trailer is rated to carry before you load it — a cubic metre is around a tonne and a half. You can borrow one of ours free for two hours.

  • Can brickies sand be delivered?

Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs, seven days. Tell us the address, how much you need and where it can be tipped. Confirm the current delivery cost when you order.
