Natural Wood Chips are milled hardwood chips, larger than the pine bark. The size is the point: bigger, heavier pieces stay where you put them on a path, a tree surround or a windy corner, and they take being walked on in a way a fine mulch does not.

What can you use Natural Wood Chips for?
Paths and walkways
A chip you can walk on. It compacts a little underfoot into a surface rather than scattering, which is exactly what a fine mulch will not do.
Around trees
A tree surround wants to be left alone for years, and this is a mulch that will still be there. Keep the ring clear of the trunk itself.
Windy and exposed corners
Where a light straw or a fine bark ends up in the lawn, a heavier chip stays in the bed. Worth knowing before you mulch an exposed front garden twice.
Play areas and utility ground
Anywhere that gets used rather than looked at. It holds up to traffic and it does not turn to dust in a season.

How much Natural Wood Chips do you need?
Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.
It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

The size does the work
Larger and heavier than the pine bark grade, which is the whole reason to choose it. Everything else a mulch does, it does — this is the one that also stays put.
Slow to break down
Hardwood chips decompose gradually, so the layer keeps working for years rather than months. On a path, that is the difference between a surface and a maintenance job.
Neutral on pH
Unlike pine bark, it will not push the soil acid. That matters if the bed already sits where you want it, or if what is planted is not an acid lover.
Adds organic matter as it goes
It is still a wood product, so it contributes to the soil as it breaks down. Slowly, which is the trade you make for it lasting.

How to use Natural Wood Chips
Work out the volume
Length by width by depth, in metres, gives you cubic metres. The calculator further down does the arithmetic. Round up rather than down.
Clear and water the ground first
Pull the weeds that are there and wet the soil through. A mulch laid over dry sand keeps it dry, and that is true whichever mulch it is.
Spread 50 to 75mm, more on a path
Fifty to seventy-five millimetres in a bed. On a path that is going to be walked on, go deeper — it compacts down and you want depth left after it has.
Keep the ring clear around trunks
Never pile it against a trunk. Leave a clear gap at the base of every tree and shrub, or you are holding moisture exactly where rot starts.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It does not feed the garden. Wood chips break down slowly and give up very little nutrient on the way, so a bed that needs feeding wants that done underneath or on top, not by the mulch.
- Fresh wood chips can draw nitrogen from the soil surface as they break down. If a bed looks hungry a month after mulching, that is usually the cause.
- The piece size that makes it stay put also makes it coarse. In a fine ornamental bed it can read as too chunky next to small plants.
- It is not a decorative coloured mulch. If the brief is a dark or red finish, the colour-injected mulches are what that job wants.
