Woodland Brown Mulch

Brown that stays brown.

Woodland Brown is chipped and shredded pine finished in a rich brown tone. It is UV-stable, so it holds its colour where an untreated pine chip greys off, and it is the decorative mulch that still reads as natural rather than as landscaping.

What Woodland Brown Mulch suits

What can you use Woodland Brown Mulch for?

  • Garden beds and borders

The everyday job, done with a finish that holds. It suits a bed you want looking tidy without committing the garden to a strong colour.

  • Around trees and shrubs

A natural brown under established planting looks like it belongs there, and the UV stability means it still does next summer.

  • Verge strips and residential front gardens

Seen from the street, and the one part of the garden nobody wants to redo every year. Colour that holds is the whole specification there.

  • Feature landscaping

Consistent size and consistent colour, which is what a designed bed needs. It is the restrained option among the coloured mulches.

How much Woodland Brown Mulch

How much Woodland Brown Mulch do you need?

Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. For a bed 4m by 1.2m filled to 75mm, that is 4 × 1.2 × 0.075 = 0.36 m³.

It is an estimate. Uneven ground and how firmly the mix settles both change what you actually use, so round up rather than down. We have not published a recommended depth for this product — describe the bed at the counter and someone who works with it every day will tell you.

Whatever you work out here lands in the enquiry form below, already written down.

That is about one trailer load. Order a touch over rather than under — a second trip costs more than the extra scoop.

Why Woodland Brown Mulch

Why choose Woodland Brown Mulch?

  • UV-stable colour

It holds its brown where an untreated pine chip greys off within a season under a Perth summer. That is the reason to choose it over a plain pine.

  • It still looks natural

Brown is close enough to real bark that the bed reads as ground rather than as landscaping. A black or a red mulch is a decision about the whole garden; this one is not.

  • Lightweight and easy to spread

A real consideration when you are barrowing several cubic metres. Pine is lighter than hardwood and this is shredded rather than chunky.

  • It does the ordinary mulch jobs

Retains soil moisture, reduces watering, suppresses weed growth. The colour is on top of that, not instead of it.

Using Woodland Brown Mulch

How to use Woodland Brown Mulch

  1. Work out the volume

Length by width by depth, in metres, gives you cubic metres. The calculator further down does it. Round up — a second trip costs more than the extra scoop.

  2. Weed and water first

Pull what is growing, then wet the soil through. A mulch laid over dry Perth sand keeps it dry, and that is true of every mulch on this site.

  3. Spread 50 to 75mm evenly

That depth blocks the light to germinating weed seed. Even coverage matters more than extra depth, especially on a bed that is going to be looked at.

  4. Keep a clear ring at every trunk

Never pile it against a stem or a trunk. Leave a gap at the base of each plant, whatever the mulch.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • It does not feed the garden. It is pine, and it breaks down slowly — the composted mulches are the ones that put organic matter into the bed.
  • It is pine, so it will trend the soil acid as it weathers. That is an advantage under azaleas and blueberries and something to think about elsewhere.
  • Lightweight cuts both ways: it is easier to spread and it moves more easily in an exposed, windy spot than a heavy hardwood chip would.
  • UV-stable is not permanent. It holds far longer than an untreated chip, but a decorative bed will still want freshening every few years.

What people say

Woodland Brown Mulch questions

Woodland Brown Mulch FAQs

  • Will Woodland Brown keep its colour?

It is UV-stable and holds its brown far longer than an untreated pine chip, which greys off within a season under a Perth summer. It will soften over a few years rather than fading in one.

  • How is it different from plain pine bark?

Same material, different finish. Woodland Brown is chipped and shredded pine given a brown tone and UV-stabilised; plain pine bark is natural and will grey. Bark is also heavier, which helps on a slope, and it lowers soil pH more noticeably.

  • Is it a strong colour?

No, and that is the point of it. Brown is close enough to natural bark that the bed reads as ground rather than as landscaping. If you want the bed noticed, the red or the black is the one for that.

  • Does it suppress weeds?

Yes, at 50 to 75mm laid evenly. It blocks the light to germinating weed seed, holds soil moisture and reduces how often you have to water — the ordinary mulch jobs, done with a finish that holds.

  • Will it blow around?

It is lightweight, which makes it easy to spread and does mean it moves more readily than a heavy hardwood chip in an exposed corner. On a windy front garden the wood chips are the steadier choice.

  • How much do I need?

Length by width by depth, all in metres, gives you cubic metres. The calculator on this page does the arithmetic. Bring the number down and we will tell you whether it is a trailer load, a bulka bag or a truck.

  • Can I collect it myself?

Yes, seven days. It is light and bulky, so a trailer takes a good amount — and you can borrow one of ours free for two hours.

  • Can Woodland Brown be delivered?

Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs. Tell us the address and how much you need, and mention tight driveways or low branches. Confirm the current delivery cost when you order.
