Bibra Lake Soils

Wetter Soil

Makes water soak in instead of running off.

Wetter Soil is Brunnings Easy Wetta Granules, 10kg net, treating up to 200 square metres. It lowers the surface tension of water so it soaks into the soil instead of beading and running off — which is the specific failure mode of dry Perth sand — and it lasts up to six months per application.

What Wetter Soil suits

What can you use Wetter Soil for?

  • Water-repellent lawns

The classic case: dry patches that stay dry no matter how long the reticulation runs. That is repellence, not a lack of water.

  • Garden beds that shed water

Where water pools in one corner of a bed and the rest stays dry. The water is going somewhere, just not in.

  • Pots and containers

Potting mix that has dried right out is famously hard to re-wet. Water runs down the gap between the mix and the pot and straight out the bottom.

  • Before summer

Applied ahead of the dry months it is doing its job when the soil is at its most repellent, rather than after you have noticed the problem.

How much Wetter Soil do you need?

One bag does most of a garden

Ten kilograms treats up to two hundred square metres, which is Brunnings' figure read off the bag. That covers the lawn and the beds of a typical suburban block.

Measure the area you actually want treated rather than the whole property — treating ground that drains fine is money doing nothing.

AreaBagsWorth knowing
A front lawn, about 80m²Under half a bagSpread with a lawn spreader for even coverage.
Lawn and beds, about 200m²One 10kg bagThe figure the pack is built around.
A large block, 400m² plusTwo bags or moreDo it in sections rather than trying to stretch one bag thin.

Water it in thoroughly after spreading — the granules have to wash into the soil to do anything. Apply in autumn or spring rather than in the middle of summer, so it is working before the soil is at its worst.

Wetter Soil in Perth

Water repellence is the Perth problem

Sand goes water repellent when it dries out, and Perth sand spends several months a year doing exactly that. A waxy organic coating develops on the grains, water beads instead of wetting them, and the bed sheds water that it desperately needs.

It is why a lawn can have a dry patch that stays dry through an entire reticulation cycle while the grass a metre away is fine. The water is arriving. It is running off.

Under a watering roster that matters more than it would elsewhere: the water comes on two or three fixed days, and if it runs off on those days there is no second chance until the next one.

Why Wetter Soil

Why choose Wetter Soil?

  • It treats 200m² for one bag

Ten kilograms, up to two hundred square metres. That is most of a suburban front and back garden from a single bag.

  • It works on the actual problem

Repellent sand does not need more water, it needs water that can get in. Running the sprinklers longer is spending money on the wrong thing.

  • Six months an application

Long enough to cover a Perth summer from a single autumn or spring application.

  • Granular, so it spreads evenly

Granules go down with a spreader and wash in. Far easier to get even coverage than with a liquid on a large area.

Using Wetter Soil

How to use Wetter Soil

  1. Spread it evenly

Granules over lawns, beds or potting media, with a spreader on anything larger than a bed. Even coverage matters — a missed strip stays repellent.

  2. Water it in

The granules have to wash into the soil to work. Water thoroughly after spreading rather than waiting for the next rain.

  3. Do it before summer, not during

Applied in autumn or spring it is working when the soil goes into its dry months. Applied in February you are treating a problem that already has hold.

  4. Repeat about every six months

Brunnings put it at up to six months per application. It is a treatment rather than a cure, and that is the honest way to think about it.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • It is not a cure. It changes how water behaves for about six months and then the soil is what it was. Clay is the permanent answer, and this is the thing you do while you get around to that.
  • It is not a fertiliser and it is not organic. It does nothing for fertility, and Brunnings do not publish the active ingredients, so we are not going to list any.
  • It will not fix a bed that is genuinely short of water. If the reticulation is not reaching an area, a wetting agent does not help — check the coverage first.
  • Applied unevenly it works unevenly. A missed strip stays repellent and shows up as a dry line across an otherwise recovered lawn.

What people say

Wetter Soil questions

Wetter Soil FAQs

  • What does a wetting agent actually do?

It lowers the surface tension of water so it can soak into the soil instead of beading on it. Dry sand develops a waxy coating that repels water, and this is what gets past that.

  • How much area does a bag treat?

Up to 200 square metres from a 10kg bag, which is Brunnings' own figure off the packaging. That is most of a suburban garden.

  • How long does it last?

Up to six months per application. It is a treatment rather than a permanent change, so it wants repeating.

  • Will it fix my dry patch?

If the patch is dry because the soil is repelling water, yes. If it is dry because the reticulation is not reaching it, no — check the coverage before you treat it.

  • Is it organic?

No, and Brunnings do not publish the active ingredients, so we are not going to list any. If that matters for your garden, ask at the counter and we will point you at what we do know.

  • Wetter or clay?

Both, honestly. The wetter works in days and covers a whole garden from one bag; clay takes real work and then it is done for good. Do the wetter now and the clay when you have a weekend.

  • When should I apply it?

Autumn or spring, ahead of the dry months, so it is working when the soil is at its most repellent rather than after the problem has taken hold.

  • Can it be delivered?

Yes, across Perth's southern suburbs. Tell us how many bags and the address, and confirm the current delivery cost when you order.
