How many bags of garden soil?
Twenty-five litres is less than it sounds
A 25 litre bag is a square metre spread 25mm thick. Filling a bed to depth takes a great deal more than topping one up, and the two get confused constantly.
If the answer below is more than about eight bags, stop and ask us — buying soil loose costs a fraction of buying it bagged, and we would rather do that sum with you.

Work it through the existing soil rather than leaving it as a layer on top, and water it in. A bed that has never been properly wet through keeps sinking on you.

Collect from the yard
Open seven days at 222 Barrington St, Bibra Lake. The loader puts it straight into your trailer or ute, and someone will tell you whether what you have brought will carry the load.
Borrow one of our trailers free for two hours to get your load home. No charge, no bond.
Have it delivered
Across Perth's southern suburbs, seven days. For a quote we need the address, how much you need, and anything awkward about access — tight driveways, low branches and side access all change which truck we send. Confirm the current cost when you order.

How to use Brunnings Garden Soil
Work out what the bed takes
Length by width by the depth you are filling, in metres, gives cubic metres — then divide by 0.025 for bags. The table below does the common sizes.
Work it through, do not layer it
Spread it into the bed and mix it with the existing soil rather than leaving it sitting on top. A layer of new soil on old soil is two materials, not one bed.
Water it in
Watering settles it and stops the bed sinking further on you a fortnight later.
For a whole bed, price it loose first
If you are filling from scratch, a bulk mix works out cheaper by volume. Ask at the counter and we will do the sum with you rather than selling you twenty bags.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- By volume it is expensive compared with buying loose. That is the price of the bag and the convenience, and it is only worth paying on a small job.
- It is a soil, not a fertiliser. It gives a bed body and structure; a hungry crop still wants feeding separately.
- It is not a native mix. Anything that wants lean, low-phosphorus ground is better served by Native Soil Mix.
- Twenty-five litres is less than it sounds. Spread 25mm deep it covers about a square metre, so a bed of any size takes more bags than people expect.
