What Aussie Organics Garden Soil suits

What can you use Aussie Organics Garden Soil for?

  • Filling a raised bed or planter

Ready to plant into as it comes out of the bag, with no blending step and nothing to wait for.

  • Planting trees and shrubs

Backfill the hole with it, or mix it half and half with what came out, so the roots have something to move into.

  • Vegetable and flower beds

Named on the pack for vegetables, flowers and ornamentals. A bag or two lifts a small bed before planting.

  • Reviving tired ground

Dug through an existing bed it puts back the structure and the organic matter that a few seasons of Perth summer take out.

How many bags?

25 litres, and what that covers

Bags are a volume, so the sum is area times depth. The rows below are that arithmetic — Aussie Organics do not publish a coverage figure and we are not going to invent one.

The honest warning is that bags add up fast. Past about eight of them, bulk soil by the cubic metre costs less and saves the lifting.

Aussie Organics Garden Soil in Perth

In Perth sand

A bag of good soil dropped into pure sand does not stay good soil for long. Water moves straight down through sand and takes the fine organic matter with it, so a single application improves a bed for a season rather than for good.

The fix is to keep at it, or to change what the sand can hold. Compost and conditioner each year is the keeping-at-it version; a clay such as bentonite or Soil Solver is the permanent one, and the two together is what actually works.

Why Aussie Organics Garden Soil

Why choose Aussie Organics Garden Soil?

  • No blending, no waiting

It is a finished soil, not an ingredient. Open the bag, fill the bed, plant into it.

  • It does two jobs

Fill with it or improve with it. Most bagged products only do one of those, which is why people end up buying two.

  • Compost carries the nutrition

Composted material rather than a fertiliser dose, so it feeds slowly and builds the soil while it does it.

  • A car boot quantity

25 litres, for the jobs where a cubic metre in the driveway would be absurd. When it stops being absurd, the bulk soils are cheaper.

Using Aussie Organics Garden Soil

How to use Aussie Organics Garden Soil

  1. Filling: use it neat

In a raised bed or a planter, fill and plant. Leave 50mm below the rim so you can mulch on top without it spilling over the edge.

  2. Improving: dig it through the top 150mm

Spread it over the bed and turn it in. Left sitting on the surface it dries out and does nothing for the roots below it.

  3. Planting a tree: half and half

Mix it with the soil that came out of the hole rather than backfilling with it neat. A pocket of rich soil in poor ground encourages roots to circle instead of spreading.

  4. Water it in, then mulch

Water settles it around the roots and mulch keeps it from drying out. In Perth sand that second step is not optional.

When to choose something else

When it is the wrong product

  • It is a general garden soil, not a native mix. For natives and acid-loving plants such as azaleas, camellias and rhododendrons, ask for something lower in phosphorus.
  • Aussie Organics publish no spread rate. The figure on this page is arithmetic on 25 litres at a stated depth, and the counter is a better answer for anything specific.
  • Bulk garden soil is a different blend to this bag. If you are ordering by the cubic metre, ask which one suits the job rather than assuming it is the same thing.
  • The pack carries a health warning: garden soils contain micro-organisms that may be harmful. Gloves, keep it moist while you work, do not breathe it in, wash your hands thoroughly afterwards.

What people say

Aussie Organics Garden Soil questions

Aussie Organics Garden Soil FAQs

  • Can I plant straight into it?

Yes. It is a finished soil blend rather than an ingredient, so in a raised bed or a planter you can fill and plant on the same afternoon.

  • What is actually in it?

Aussie Organics describe it as organic compost and screened lawn sand. The compost carries the nutrition and the water holding, the screened sand gives it structure and drainage.

  • How many bags do I need?

At 25mm deep, one bag does about a square metre. There are forty bags to a cubic metre, so if you are filling rather than topping up, ask about bulk soil instead.

  • Is it suitable for natives?

It is a general garden soil, so for natives and acid-loving plants such as azaleas and camellias, ask us for something lower in phosphorus.

  • Is the bulk garden soil the same thing?

No. Our bulk soils and this bag are different products from different makers — this one is blended at Serpentine. Both do the job, but tell us which one you are after so you get the same material twice.
