Aussie Organics Premium Potting Mix
Fed for nine months, and it still takes water in February.
A 30 litre bag of potting mix from Aussie Organics at Serpentine, with slower release fertiliser, trace elements and a wetting agent already blended through it. Aussie Organics rate the fertiliser for up to nine months. It suits hanging baskets, tubs, indoor and outdoor pots, and repotting.

Real stock, not a swatch. Blended products vary a little batch to batch, so treat these as a guide rather than an exact colour match.

What Aussie Organics Premium Potting Mix suits
What can you use Aussie Organics Premium Potting Mix for?
Hanging baskets and tubs
The containers that dry out fastest, which is exactly where the wetting agent pays for itself.
Indoor and outdoor pots
A general mix rather than a specialist one, so the same bag does the veranda and the living room.
Repotting and potting on
Fresh mix and a size up. Old mix collapses and stops draining, which is usually why the plant stalled.
Potted citrus, herbs and vegetables
Listed by Aussie Organics among its uses, along with potted colour and fruit trees.
How many bags?
Litres, and what they fill
Potting mix is sold by volume and pots are measured the same way, so the sum is usually straightforward — the pot's litres, plus a bit for settling.
Aussie Organics publish no coverage figure for it. The rows below are arithmetic on common pot sizes, not a manufacturer recommendation.
| Pack | Size | Roughly what it fills |
|---|---|---|
| Premium Potting Mix | 30 litre bag | One 30L pot, two 15L, or about six 200mm pots. |
| Hanging baskets | 250-300mm | Five to eight from a bag, depending on the basket. |
| Repotting | One size up | Allow the new pot's volume, less the root ball you are putting back in. |
Buy a little more than the sum says. Fresh mix settles when you first water it, and topping up from a second bag weeks later never quite matches.
Why Aussie Organics Premium Potting Mix
Why choose Aussie Organics Premium Potting Mix?
Nothing to add at planting
The fertiliser is in the bag and Aussie Organics rate it for up to nine months, so the first feed is not a job you have to remember.
It still wets up in summer
A wetting agent through the mix is what stops water running down the inside of the pot and out the bottom while the root ball stays dry.
Trace elements included
A plant in a pot cannot send roots off to find the minor nutrients. Whatever is in the mix is all it gets.
Bagged in Western Australia
Serpentine, by a family business at it since 1994, and it comes to us on the same delivery as their compost and manures.

Using Aussie Organics Premium Potting Mix
How to use Aussie Organics Premium Potting Mix
Water the plant first
A dry root ball breaks apart when you lift it out. Water it an hour before and it comes out in one piece.
Go one pot size up
Two sizes up leaves a ring of wet mix with no roots in it, and that is where root rot starts.
Match the old soil line
Part fill, sit the plant so its old soil level lines up with where the new one will be, then fill around it. Burying the stem deeper than it grew is a common way to lose a plant.
Firm gently, then water right through
Firm enough to hold the plant upright and no more. Then water until it runs out the bottom, which settles the mix into the gaps without you compacting it.
When to choose something else
When it is the wrong product
- It is a container mix. In a garden bed it dries out fast and the fertiliser washes straight through the sand — use the garden soil or a compost instead.
- It is a general purpose mix, not a specialist one. Orchids, cacti, carnivorous plants and acid-lovers all want something different.
- Do not compact it. The air spaces are the point, and pressing it in takes them out.
- The pack carries a health warning: garden soils contain micro-organisms that may be harmful. Gloves on, keep it damp so it does not dust, do not breathe it in, wash your hands afterwards.
